But I question what this place would be like should everyone be in lock step.
***There’s no attempt or need for a lock step. It would only be a way to see what a poster thinks on various topics. For instance, you and I on the AFIRE ping list sometimes end up in discussions with FReepers about immigration and I find myself going round & round with someone. When I dig deeper into it, I find RINOs. It’s okay that they’re RINOs. But they try to hide behind their pretense of conservatism in other areas, like cockroaches. And when the voting time comes, it appears that 20% of RINOs voted for Obama.

What do you think of an idealogical litmus matrix?
I can see the desire for something like that, but have qualms. Jim has been very upfront about FR and its stance. And I’m on board all the way. But I question what this place would be like should everyone be in lock step.

There are times I get mad, frustrated and angry over some ridiculous post. But I also see (when I have more clarity) that such things are part of the spice of FR. And if I didn’t have that thrown in I’d miss it. And I believe it’s this realization that gives me qualms about such a thing.

Do we really want to begin ‘categorizing’ everybody?
***It’s okay to let them self-categorize. Let them answer a list of questions, see where they stand. When we find ourselves debating some ridiculous point about immigration and check on someone’s answers to the litmus matrix, it won’t surprise us to find a RINO or a Ron Paul supporter. And it’s okay for them to be RINOs, they’re just outed and can’t pretend to be conservative. I stop listening to such FReepers once I’ve drilled down. It would save time.

As you describe it I’ve no problem. Only why not do it on a personal basis instead of it being an FR thing (at least that’s how I interpret your idea...I may be wrong). Set up your own matrix and see how people fall in place on it. I believe mnehrling had a matrix he posted during the primaries that showed where candidates fell on the political spectrum.

Like you, I tend to stay away from those who’ve outed themselves; Paulettes especially. Not just because of their political stance but because they pontificate and patronize anyone not in lock step with them. THAT’S why I don’t want something like this to become overbearing. I’ve experienced it from the other end from those yokels.

So, go for it. If Jim believes it’s something beneficial for FR, fine. But FR has existed for how many years without such a tool, is it really necessary now? I simply believe in our monitoring our interactions ourselves, calling on the Viking Kitties when necessary to deal with the obvious Troll. It works when needed and also provides an amount of good entertainment; especially when they let us play awhile. That’s something I look forward to...
