Good old Enfield, smoothest, fastest bolt action ever made. In WWI the Germans thought the British were using machine guns in several areas but all they were facing was the .303 Enfield, worked by experts!

The Brits used to have the "Mad Minute" where you put as many rounds as possible into a man-sized target (forget the distance - maybe 100 or 150 yards?) in sixty seconds.
They say that a trained infantryman could achieve 30 rpm -- I can't do any better than 15! (it's changing out the stripper clips that slows me down!)

IIRC, the average soldier was expected to be able to shoot over 20 aimed rounds per minute, and the record is closer to 40. Most people these days can't do 40 aimed rounds with a semi-automatic.
