The biggest problem for newspapers today: they can't compete against the modern audience that demands near-instant delivery of the news and can now get it through 24-hour cable news channels and the public Internet. In short, newspapers have become the first victim of the "de-massification of the media" Alvin Toffler warned about way back in 1979 in his famous book The Third Wave.
