Thank you dianed. I’m seeing a trail of info on the internet and on FR about the importance of magnesium. I’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia and my mother has advanced osteoporosis (four bad breaks in four years).

Welcome to Freerepublic! :)

Sorry to hear about your mom but I’m glad you have gotten good info about your health that could help keep you vigilant to keep well.
Please look into the link between dairy products and osteoporosis. Info that has NOT been put out by the Dairy Council. There is some new research being done that indicates a high level of inflammation with dairy product ingestion (we’re not really built to digest high lactose cows milk). Inflammatory markers are seen in the blood up to 17 days after eating a single piece of cheese.

Perhaps getting your calcium from more vegetables(better absorbed) and a good supplement with magnesium in it would be helpful. Magnesium is best absorbed when taken at night, (and it will help with sleep, help maintain normal blood pressure and decrease constipation as an added benefit. I use an easy to take liquid form. It comes in different flavors and is called Liquimins Cal Mag Zinc supplement. It has magnesium, 600mg Calcium 1200 mg, and Zinc 15 mg. I like that it has trace minerals in it as well.

This link might help with info about the dairy issue. I have been a participant in the Harvard Nurses Health study since 1982 and Dr. Willett has really come out with some very important recommendations.
