"a sensible interpretation of the amendment is that it was written to allow the people to raise a militia for protection and to hunt for food."

I must have missed the "hunt for food" part?

"Clearly no one needs to raise a militia these days,"

Oh really? Says who?

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The
strongest reason for the people to retain their right to
keep and bear arms is as a last resort to protect
themselves against tyranny in government."

--Thomas Jefferson, Draft Virginia Constitution (1776)

"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed -
unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments
are afraid to trust the people with arms."

--James Madison, The Federalist Papers No. 46

If he said this today, Jefferson would be placed on an FBI watchlist and probably get a visit from the ATF.
