Peggy Noonan is exactly right. Sarah Palin is the worst thing that could happen to the conservative movement. She appeals to the worst instincts of those on our side and at the core is not a thoughtful person on the issues that should matter to us.

Someone who blithely says we should go to war with Russia if it invades Georgia (as she told Charlie Gibson), and who did little more than repeat her applause lines over and over again on the campaign trail hasn't yet shown the substance it will take to draw a wider base beyond a segment of conservatives. Who does she take us for, a bunch of boobs? Include me out!

Like many here I initially was thrilled by her selection, especially after the convention speech, but it became apparent there wasn't much substance after the speeches. It's time for us to work on ourselves as a conservative movement, get back to basics, and develop a deeper bench of solid conservatives throughout the party, instead of building a cult of personality around "Sarah," which seems to be the norm around here.

I went for Sarah at first too-she is apologetically conservative-refreshing. However, she also symbolizes what is wrong with the GOP-applause lines, but no new ideas to solve what is some very serious problems in the US.

The question was about Georgia " if a member of Nato" would we defend Georgia? I guess you would cancel NATO?

GOP would have been killed if not for Sarah.

I wonder who is the 'Big Gun" Saxby is bringing into Georgia for his election?

In the Zogby Poll more people knew more about Sarah Palin than Obama?

We can thank McCain for that.

You are a Dole-MCCain GOP Bye

This statement alone identifies you as a liar or a fool; either way, you are worthy of being ignored.

I agree with you that she “did little more than repeat her applause lines over and over again on the campaign trail” and I also “initially was thrilled by her selection, especially after the convention speech”, and I also agree with you that “it became apparent there wasn’t much substance after the speeches”, but I’m still willing to give her the benefit of the doubt based on the fact that Palin was sabotaged by her “handlers” in the McCain campaign. She’s got some time now to prove what she’s capable of outside of her association with one of the biggest RINOs ever to lumber on to the political stage.

I think it's amusing that people on our side like you would never think to call Biden a total buffoon....even though he is a political hack of the first order and never held a real job in his life...and would never publically consider him to be totally unfit to be POTUS.....yet pick apart SP....even to the absurd criticism about her campaign stump speech.....conservatives like you have another agenda against SP....why don't you tell us what it is?

Completely disagree. If you're looking for Palin being substantive, go find the video of Alaska gubernatorial debates. She blows both candidates away with substance. You seem to be forgetting that as VP candidate, she's going to be reading speeches written for her by campaign staff; blame them for how she appeared and what she said in speeches.

You didn't mention how horrible she was during her interviews, even with Hannity. I think those were abberations, due to her not being fully up to speed on the national issues, and her handlers scripting her too much, causing her to have to try to remember what to say instead of just saying it. I also think you're overstating her going to war with Russia if it invades Georgia.

None this means that Palin is hands down the candidate for 2012, as we have Jindal and Daniels, among others, to consider. But get off the "Palin is a disaster for the party" bandwagon. The media isn't going after her this hard if she wasn't a viable threat, and there is an elitist snot aspect to our party that is rejecting her for reasons which the rest of us find endearing and connecting.

She never said that. She demonstrated what our obligation would be under article 5 of NATO if Georgia was a NATO member.

You base your “lack of substance” comments on what the media tells you. You are just like the Republicans that fell for the “he's just a stupid actor” meme about Reagan. Don't worry about being played for a fool by Governor Palin, you've already been played for a fool.

Well, for someone who wasn't very polished, she DESTROYED Biden (oh, God, our next VP) in the VP debate. She indeed has a face for TV and instead of bashing her a little more, maybe she can polish up a bit more in four years and be a tremendous threat. I am looking forward to seeing how she grows over the next four years.

I am really not sure what you mean by "She appeals to the worst instincts of those on our side". Maybe you can expand a bit on that.

She’s got a bunch more substance than your president elect. You need to read her energy speech.

You have been sucked in by the half truths & lies of the biased media. The media will do the same for any candidate who threatens their agenda.

For anyone interested, go read up on the Alaska Highway Pipeline that Sarah Palin negotiated to be built by TransCanada Corp. Sarah busted the chops of the Alaska oil & gas commission along with ExxonMobil, ConnocoPhillips and BP who had been sitting on their butts for years not wanting to build a much needed gas pipeline coming off the North Slope. In doing so, this new pipeline will provide the USA with 6%-8% of natural gas needs. Iran, Russia, and Qatar are in the process of forming a natural gas cartel. Sarah Palin just beat those three countries in a geopolitical economic war and put the USA on the road to ensured independence for our natural gas needs.

Sarah Palin is a very intelligent woman who is making America energy independent.

Someone who blithely says we should go to war with Russia if it invades Georgia (as she told Charlie Gibson),
"Ukraine and Georgia have also been developing their ties with NATO. Their leaders have declared their readiness to advance a NATO Membership Action Plan, MAP, to prepare for the rights and obligations of membership. They are working to consolidate democratic reforms and to undertake new responsibilities in their relationship with the Alliance. I welcome the desire and actions of these countries to seek closer ties with NATO and hope that NATO responds favorably to their request, consistent with its criteria for membership. " The One - Monday, March 3, 2008
GIBSON: Because Putin has said he would not tolerate NATO incursion into the Caucasus.

PALIN: Well, you know, the Rose Revolution, the Orange Revolution, those actions have showed us that those democratic nations, I believe, deserve to be in NATO.

Putin thinks otherwise. Obviously, he thinks otherwise, but...

GIBSON: And under the NATO treaty, wouldn't we then have to go to war if Russia went into Georgia?

PALIN: Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.

But NATO, I think, should include Ukraine, definitely, at this point and I think that we need to -- especially with new leadership coming in on January 20, being sworn on, on either ticket, we have got to make sure that we strengthen our allies, our ties with each one of those NATO members.

We have got to make sure that that is the group that can be counted upon to defend one another in a very dangerous world today. - Gibson interview

I'm sorry if Governor Palin's view on the US meeting treaty obligations IF Georgia becomes a treaty party is not as nuanced as your's and Obama's.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Palin was the only real conservative on the ticket. Sounds like you would only be happy with a liberal Republican (i.e. a closet Democrat).

While even I have more academic creds than the Gov, and thanks to FreeRepublic know more about international affairs, I can see that she has an excellent presentation and the attitude and stamina of a winning athlete. She is a cross between TR and Andy Jackson. There aren’t many Conservatives to the right of her and this side of sanity.

building a cult of personality around "Sarah," which seems to be the norm around here.

What issues are you in disagreement with Gov Palin? And can that "cult of Sarah" canard. Same thing was/is said about those admirers of Reagan.
