Radio Host Has Drug Company Ties (Big Pharma using NPR to sell drugs)
The New York Times ^ | November 22, 2008 | GARDINER HARRIS

Posted on 11/22/2008 6:54:19 AM PST by raybbr

An influential psychiatrist who was the host of the popular NPR program “The Infinite Mind” earned at least $1.3 million from 2000 to 2007 giving marketing lectures for drugmakers, income not mentioned on the program.

The psychiatrist and radio host, Dr. Frederick K. Goodwin, is the latest in a series of doctors and researchers whose ties to drugmakers have been uncovered by Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa. Dr. Goodwin, a former director of the National Institute of Mental Health, is the first news media figure to be investigated.

Dr. Goodwin’s weekly radio programs have often touched on subjects important to the commercial interests of the companies for which he consults. In a program broadcast on Sept. 20, 2005, he warned that children with bipolar disorder who were left untreated could suffer brain damage, a controversial view.

“But as we’ll be hearing today,” Dr. Goodwin told his audience, “modern treatments — mood stabilizers in particular — have been proven both safe and effective in bipolar children.”

That same day, GlaxoSmithKline paid Dr. Goodwin $2,500 to give a promotional lecture for its mood stabilizer drug, Lamictal, at the Ritz Carlton Golf Resort in Naples, Fla. In all, GlaxoSmithKline paid him more than $329,000 that year for promoting Lamictal, records given to Congressional investigators show.

Conflict of interest laws.

I am was not aware a law like this. Are you sure there is such a law that is applicable to this type of action?

Horrors! Nothing in the NYT about the truth of any of the things the guy is saying - just the “fact” that he is associated with drug companies.

Dr. Frederick K. Goodwin = pimp for the drug companies.

And, he's inflicting harm on children.

But he's not the ONLY one. Teachers recommend that mostly active little boys get Ritalin for ADHD... when in fact they're just normal little guys. But the teachers want an orderly classroom.

Perfect examples of why our boys are falling behind. They're drugged by maggots.

The media docs aren't the only ones I want to see busted, but this is at least a start.

I have a list nearly as long as my arm of these so-called "experts" who are just stooges for big Pharma -- I wonder if Grassley would be interested?

Anything that Chuckie Grassley thinks is wrong, I’m inclined to think is right.

Yeah, I know, even a blind pig finds an acorn now and then, but sometimes a pig is just a pig...

Where would I find that law in the federal code?

I think anyone who gets their medical advice from a a radio talk show is your basic damnfool.

LOL!
Now we have the evil public media!

No, wait: that's no surprise...

How is this doctor's case any different than that of Gwen Ifill, who mediated the Palin/Biden debate while working on an Obama hagiography?

I think the law that's being considered is that he's using NPR (taxpayers) for furthering his commercial interests. Everyone else has to buy radio time for that.

I would agree but then I also wouldn't be wondering what ficticious characters (Jack Bauer) would be doing about it.

Remember the scandal a long, long, long time ago (in this galaxy tho) when it was discovered DJ's were getting paid off by record companies to play their records?

This really isn't any different.......
