Was Palin the Worst VP Pick Ever?
Publius' Forum ^ | 11/21/07 | Warner Todd Huston

We have gone through the first round of internal recriminations with the recent excoriation of Governor Palin by those “unnamed” McCain staffers. But, as we all know, Gov. Palin was the subject of heated debate even among Republicans long before the election. One common complaint was that she was the "worst" VP candidate pick "ever." But, was she really?

A look at recent history can only serve to deflate that ridiculous claim. There have been far worse picks than Gov. Palin and only the extremely emotional state of mind that this past election ginned up could obscure the historical record. Two of those picks in particular make Palin's choice rather inspired by comparison.

In the first case George Wallace's pick of general Curtis LeMay for his vice presidential pick in 1968 was a disaster and in the second George McGovern's pick of Thomas Eagleton for his in 1972 was even worse -- both were far more disastrous than Palin's. There was some speculation in the media that Palin would suffer Eagleton's fate, but the situations of the two just don't bear any resemblance at all...

The Dems crossed over in the primaries to get McCain in because they thought he would be weakest. We MUST stop allowing the Dems to cross over in the primaries!

Sheer imbecility. Without Palin McCain would have lost in a genuine landslide, as the GOP base would have stayed home or voted for Barr. In fact, if the financial crisis hadn’t displaced high oil prices as the central issue of the campaign, she might have carried Mac over the finish line.

I still want to know whether Soros, Buffet or any pro-Obama hedge-fund managers have their fingerprints on the timing of the crisis. Were financial companies dumped, or even short sold, by pro-Obama folks with deep pockets in order to trigger the crisis? I think it would have happened eventually anyway, but as the left is fond of saying, the timing is suspicious.

Dude, you should actually READ it first. The article supports Sarah. I hate it when people like you blather on without even reading anything!

You stopped reading at the first paragraph, yet think you have enough info to comment. Funny. Next time become informed before you blather.

I’m troubled by the Cindy McCain and “lover” pictures. Is that for real or a “Photo Shop” deal?

You are correct in that I should have said “statements like this” rather than “articles like this.”

“I hate it when people like you” choose to personalize your comments when you really don’t know what I did. There is really no need to insult people unless that makes you feel superior.

No more than your poor choice of words made you look like YOU were insulting people. But, if you really didn’t mean to attack what I posted and only and a poor choice of words, I can admit if my piquant reply was misplaced. If I am corrected, I can admit a mistake.

I don't see where you got that I was insulting anyone, but if it came across that way, I apologize. I am frustrated by the media drumbeat to embed ideas into the public mindset about any conservative that dares to raise their voice. Palin is seen as a threat, and so the accusations will continue until to public is tired of hearing about it by 2012.

They did it with Delay, Bush, Gingrich, Cheney, Haliburton, “Big Oil,” “Big Tobacco,”... in time, they can make anyone out to be incompetent, evil, or ignorant in the eyes of the public by simply repeating the accusations over and over. Eventually, even supporters can grow weary of it and start looking somewhere else.

I think it is going to take a strong conservative to show up on the public radar about 12-18 months before the 2012 elections to have a chance to win so that they can't be smeared for quite as long, and the public won't already be tired of them come election day.

I have read some exit polling that indicates McLame would of lost by 15% if it had not been for Sarah. I think that number is low.

In your last, I agree 100%. I am also sick of the media telling us who we should pick as our leaders!
