Mitt Romney Takes on Detroit

By Garance Franke-Ruta

The race for 2012 is already on in the Republican Party, and today failed 2008 contender Mitt Romney appeared to take a stand sure to complicate any future presidential bid. In an op-ed bluntly titled, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," the former Massachusetts governor argued against the automobile salaries and pension systems that have for decades helped define the good life in industrial Michigan, where Romney won the GOP primary this winter and where his father was once governor.

rodeo-mama,

Your statement was not simple, nor is it the truth. It is just an ignorant attempt to justify your own candidate by knocking down a good woman. I hope that the Lord blesses you with the shame you should feel and the repentance you should display.

The choice of Sarah Palin, whose strength, courage, and resolve were known to those of us who work to change laws in order to limit abortions and save our young mothers and families, understood her nomination as an answer to our prayers.

Feminism is not incompatible with conservativism and it most certainly is not an insult.

I’ve been a member of Feminists for Life for years - one of the first places I heard about the Governor. That organization knocks peoples assumptions about what a woman has the right to demand from her college a what a college should expect from women and fights to give women a true choice.

Sarah Palin works, as every woman I’ve ever known does.

However, she proved her conservatism with the fact that she does have 5 kids. One of whom would have been killed by 90% of the mothers in the US.

And she and her family loved this country enough to sacrifice their privacy and to work much harder than I imagine you ever have or could.

Thank the Lord for sending her when He did. That was the day I put up my Limbaugh/Coulter ‘08 T-shirt and started wearing McCain ‘08.

If only romney-ites could defend his ideas rather than try to make him look taller by underhanded attacks on Republicans.

Wow, Mitt supporters seem to be the only ones bashing Palin and parroting MSM talking points about her on the thread.

I am shocked, shocked I say!

And you guys wonder why we didn’t and still don’t buy the whole Mitt is a conservative bit...

Maybe, but how many FReepers are like me? I think both Romney and Palin are very good.

I think there are a few but I can’t think of how the two can compare from the POV of conservatives.

Well, there seems to be a large number of FReepers who believe all the liberal MSM-generated BS about Romney, but rightly dismiss BS from the same sources about Palin.

If you fairly and equally dismiss hateful liberal BS about both of them, there's plenty to like in both Mitt and Sarah.

Um the information that has established Mitt’s lack of Conservative bonafides has come from Mitt’s very actions and words, from his own mouth. No MSM required. His record is well documented from first hand sources.

Palin has no such problem. Her record has spoken very well for her.

Irony in that is the fact the attacks on a candidte whose record is clearly and almost unerringly conservative are comming from the supporters of one who has expended all effort, with little success, to prove his own so called conservative credintials

I am only posting what my honest analysis of governor Palin is after watching all her interviews especially on Greta’s OTR. However I still think Palin has tremendous potential to become the leader of the conservative movement and run for president IF she spends a lot of time on national and international issues. Only time will tell. At this time she lacks gravitas.

and as addendum to my post above, Mitt Romney is NOT my 1st choice in 2012 at this point. He was in 2008. 2012 is too far away.

Thank God Rush and Hannity, and Levin was able to discern Romney convervative actions....

Now if only the anti were able to be honest and give credit for the possitive things Mitt has Done and acknowledge his accomplishment.

You when Reagan left office the liberals moved back in to fill the void...

When Gov Romney term was over the marixst also moved in to undo or distort what Romney tries to do inspite of pinko house and senate..

You anti’s measure with prejudice eye.

I agree.

Mitt is the stronger of the two on policy wonkery, especially relating to the economy, jobs, enterprise, and taxes. The current article is a fine example. But Mitt fails to connect to the voters, and that's where Sarah shines.

Mitt comes across as wishy-washy and plastic. A little too good to be true. It's obvious he can talk a good story. But will he stick to it? Sarah, on the other hand, is obviously a woman of principle and conviction. She doesn't have the years of experience running Bain Capital, nor is she a Baker Scholar with a Havard MBA/JD. But voters sense she knows what's important and has the will to get the right things done.

After his success at fixing the Salt Lake City Olympics mess, Mitt was considered a contender for governor of either Utah or Massachusetts. He should have gone for Utah governor, assuming that was a realistic possibility. His record governing Utah would have been a lot cleaner. Instead, he took on the challenge of being a Republican governor of one of the bluest states in the union. So, now is record is full of compromise...

The anti-Romney spammers are coddled and nurtured by FR with complaisant solicitude.

It is true why are you trying to deny it JR never deny it his contempt for Romney.

Are we not entitled to our discernment the site is called Free Republic.

Some conservatives see things one way and some sees it another way...

I say you are wrong Romney does believe in the Conservative Values and even lived them better than most of you here...

Even Rush, Hannity, and Levin Ingrahm etc have state so

the heart of this trouble for many is the fact he is also a Mormon.

many have fear to see the Judeo-Christian laws really put into play!

These were my own observations, despite listening to Rush and watching Fox News. Sorry to break it to you. But did it ever occur to you that maybe they got it right just this one time? They did. Palin was another of McCain’s gimmicks

I listen to Rush etc and FNC and some of what you are saying is not true, never did anyone denounced Palin what’s wrong with you rodeo-mamma?

Ben Franklin remarked, “We have given you a Republic, if you can keep it.”

Wrong again it was Thomas Jefferson who said that!

You can argue Romney’s intentions all day long. However, what he actually said is not subject to interpretation.
