Mitt Romney Takes on Detroit

By Garance Franke-Ruta

The race for 2012 is already on in the Republican Party, and today failed 2008 contender Mitt Romney appeared to take a stand sure to complicate any future presidential bid. In an op-ed bluntly titled, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," the former Massachusetts governor argued against the automobile salaries and pension systems that have for decades helped define the good life in industrial Michigan, where Romney won the GOP primary this winter and where his father was once governor.

Excuse me, did I call you any names? No, you called me names, don’t tell me to do what you need to do. It’s a form of hypocrisy. You called me sexist. Remember? So now where do you get off preaching the word to me. It’s very bad to be vile to someone and then try preaching to them. You aren’t helping anyone at all, in fact, it seems very wicked to call someone names and then to quote scripture. I can understand why you don’t get where I am coming from. It is very clear.

I am not re-arranging the words, I am being consistent. Sorry if you find that troublesome. I am driving the same point home, without talking points, because what I saying is true. And I understand perfectly well what I am talking about. As far as Romney goes He was very articulate about conservative principals. And I know that he said he had a change of heart about a few issues. That’s about as complicated as it was for me. I liked the guy, but he was slandered and we ended up with McCain. It’s important to have articulate leaders. The bottom line, Romney did a pretty good job upholding conservative principals in a very liberal state. I wouldn’t blame Romney if he never wanted to run for office again. He tried. He was a true servent. He didn’t need the money, he wasn’t an opportunist. He really wanted to help. Palin is not a servent, she is an opportunist. All she has done is been on the government payroll her entire career. She is not a good conservative spokesperson.

ever heard of the good ole boys club? these old farts in our party will hold on with a death grip to the power they have.
THEY are going to be the death of us. time to move on. fresh faces and true conservatism. they know time is running out and they are fighting and clawing to stop the clock. pathetic really.
they are threatened by sarah palin. she not only brought huge crowds, but they were enthusiastic! i have not seen so much excitement in our party for years.
SO she was a drag on the ticket? that must be why mccain only brought in a few hundred to hear him speak, but palin came aboard suddenly we saw tens of thousands. drag indeed!
a sad day when we have to deal with this garbage from peeps in our own party, i would expect better of them than stupid liberal talking points.
i suspect that at some point, should he show interest in 2012 that they will turn on jindal too. this is not about her specifically, but about power....

What else would he do but run ? He’s got nothing else to do. I’m also at a loss to understand how he was ever considered a “fiscal Conservative.” He was one of the most fiscally reckless Governors of ANY state. He implemented a program open Democrats only dream of, and was thrilled to do it, that being his Socialist state healthcare program (even the Democrats in the state are at a loss as to how to cover the costs, which grow by the minute).

This guy was a categorical disaster on every front. Worse than that, he didn’t even want to be Governor, it was just something he needed for his resume. This guy grew so bored having to deal with parochial issues that he was reduced to rubber-stamping every liberal notion that crossed his desk. The final straw was what happened with Brian and Beverly Mauck, when one of his leftist rubber-stamped judicial picks let a psychotic murderer loose. He had ample evidence the judicial applicant would be pro-criminal and he didn’t care, he was late that day for his infamous lunch at Ruth’s Chris. This “man” was one of the biggest frauds and worst Governors this party has ever coughed up. An open Democrat couldn’t have caused the harm he did as a RINO.

uhm that is because palin did not go in to politics with the plan to make it a career. she began as a pta mom, like many of us have done. she was ENCOURAGED to run for mayor and again for governor. her “career” was not planned. she is not nor has she ever been a “career politician” as much of our party is now.
she did not seek out a VP slot, again she was approached and asked to serve her country. a opportunist seeks out these positions, not the other way around.
you may claim to know what the “moderates” want, but you are wrong. my husband, as well as some friends and family could be classified as moderates or “swing voters” and they LOVED her.
most if not all peeps i have talked too that like her say the main attraction to her was she was one of us, not a another lawyer, not part of the “machine”....despite your claims otherwise that it has to do with her looks or feminine appeal. that is more liberal BS.
despite how hard the msm and the left AND those in our party try to say otherwise she has broad appeal. had our party voted or not voted third party we may have won despite the immense dislike for mccain....

A sad fact, too, is that several of our sitting Governors are sniveling RINOs that have been more than content to cripple the parties they run. Crist of FL (who willfully allowed a ghastly number of felons to vote in this election, giving the state to the False Messiah), Ah-nold in CA (who isn’t even attempting to hide he’s a Socialist), Rell of CT (a lady Governor and empty-suit RINO who presided over the death of the federal GOP), Daniels of IN (again, also content to let the GOP twist in the wind, and did nothing to carry the party when he was reelected this month, with the Dems capturing the state with a vengeance on his watch), Pawlenty of MN (who squandered his GOP majority, now a minority, and is one of these global warming kooks), Blunt of MO (another gutless weasel like his useless father in Congress, who ran away crying like a little girl rather than run for reelection — a seat we promptly lost this month), Gibbons of NV (a sleazebag whose escapades have been exposed after he was elected Governor, and a big Harry Reid friend — presided over a collapse of the GOP in the state this month), Perry of TX (another pretty-boy RINO one inch away of seeing our hard-fought gains disappear in the legislature). You get the idea.

wow. is he by chance another one the msm gives a pass too? i dont recall much being discussed about romney or were they waiting for him to be the pick and drip it out over the campaign season?
what you are telling me sounds a lot like obama, policy wise, i dare say compared to romney mccain is the more conservative of the two!
our party needs a overhaul. too man rinos, closet socialists and old farts who are desperate to stay in power by any means necessary.
if we dont get our acts together and get rid of these peeps we will not win another election:(

Precisely. Gov. Palin is the polar-opposite of an opportunist politician. She’s had to go up against an entrenched corrupt RINO establishment regime in AK. All 3 of their federal officeholders are anti-Palin RINOs. We almost lost 2 of them in one shot, and lost the Senate seat because Stevens refused to quit and allow another nominee in his place. You literally have to be a convicted felon to lose as a Republican for federal office, and that came to pass. She not only has to battle these crooks, but the Dems as well. I can’t begin to imagine the stress she is under on a daily basis from so many sides out to see her destroyed.

damn! what a mess...
i guess i have to add kooks, gutless weasels and sleazebags to my previous list of socialists, power hungry old farts and rinos!
do we have enough up and coming conservatives to fill these spots? i worry we are going to wind up with the same old worthless peeps or worse, more obama kneelers?

Anybody looking for a POLITICIAN to be their “daddy” has serious mental issues.

Well, that explains 90% of the 'rat base.

The media would’ve loved to see ole Slick Willard nominated, and once he was, they’d have unleashed every single allegation and action he’s ever done — to remind Conservative Republicans he ain’t one of them — but is a flipflopping, soulless, liberal opportunist (and the media would’ve followed that one up with close scrutiny of his business practices, i.e. massive firings, his family’s refusal to serve in the military, and his religion, all of which would’ve turned off one GOP group after another and drastically harmed turnout. The GOP would’ve been in utter bedlam by November all the while the Dems would’ve made even greater pickups).

This was all the reason why I risked my account day after day screaming to the heavens trying to warn people on this guy when so many were willing to swallow the nightmare he would’ve been for us. I dislike McCain, I had little use for him, but it was appalling to inform people that as BAD as McCain was, Slick Willard was WORSE (and he would’ve picked a liberal RINO as a running mate, perhaps Crist of FL, which would’ve had the homosexual rumors flying like crazy).

you know i dont have a problem at all with her taking out corruption regardless of party. if we had more peeps like that we would not be in the mess we are today.
the most appealing to me about palin was her willingness to call a spade a spade, to stand up for conservatism and not back down. i can not remember the last time i saw that in a republican!
i wish peeps would actually listen to what she says instead of listening to what the msm says she said. there is a BIG difference.

well obama got over 75 percent of the single women. our nation is SO dysfunctional on a colossal level!
maybe the conservative slogan should be “putting the FUN back in disFUNctional” ;)

It’s a good question. I don’t know. So many of our best and brightest not in public office are highly reluctant to run. They know Dems get a total pass while Conservative Republicans get destroyed by the media. If it was you and your family, would you REALLY want to put yourself through that ? The media would’ve been content to hound the Palin family until Bristol committed suicide. That’s just how truly evil they are. The media is a cancer in this country, one that needs to be obliterated into a billion pieces, never to rise again.

i was not a fan of mccains either, for whatever reason i never considered him at all. mccain was not the worst pick, despite word otherwise.
had the dems not hyped up the financial crisis and sent panic when they did, we very well could of had mccain/palin. oh of course if our own peeps would have bucked up and voted!
the loss was mostly our own fault. that is the most infuriating part of it all! seems if romney had been the pick, with a rino VP we would have seen what a true stomping looks like!

Face it, a majority of the voting public is woefully ignorant of facts and issues. I study this stuff daily, so a lot isn’t news to me, but I often get alarmed by just average FReepers that praise me for knowing so much more than they on political history. I don’t feel like this stuff is rocket science, it’s easily learnable. If average FReepers, the cream of the crop of informed people, feel inferior to my knowledge, it is bone-chilling how bad it must be for the average citizen, most of whom couldn’t separate Gov. Palin from the disguting caricature Tina Fey portrayed (and Fey hates Palin, which she admitted publicly, even worse than rodeo-mamma). Imagine if a Conservative program decided to do a similar caricature of the False Messiah. A half-witted Step ‘n Fetchit wearing a Mohammadan turbin reading off of cue cards held by his Black Power “Angela Davis” wife chanting “Kill Whitey” (much like the New Yorker mag cover, which was a bit TOO honest), with his little daughters saying the same, eating a watermelon, and giving birth (at 8) to more babies, wiping the placenta on the Constitution with the infants also chanting, “Kill Whitey.” Fair is fair, now. Time to go after these thugs with a vengeance. What ? We can’t do that ? Time to kill the double-standard, too.

yup, i dont blame them. what they did to palin and her children was shocking to me. i expected them to go after her, but they have sunk to new desperate lows, even for them! the things they said about trig were repulsive...
it would help in many ways if our own peeps would stop bashing every good conservative that comes along. sometimes it feels like they are more than happy to jump in the sty with the dems if for nothing more than the attention.
nothing we can do about the msm, i dont see any changes on the horizon and we have won despite them, but what do we do about those who claim to be conservative yet do all they can to destroy any chance we have?

i can help you out there, on the average citizen since my BIL is one. they work 8-12 hours a day, come home, eat supper, and plop in front of the TV. they listen to the news when some thing grabs their attention and then resume reading the paper, mostly the funnies.
they get politics from peeps at work over the water cooler, and the blips and sound bytes via the msm.
the entire world could be in crisis and if it did not directly effect their lives they would never, EVER know.
i admit at times ignorance is bliss crosses my mind. would i be so fearful for our country if that was the extent of my information? probably not. it would be just another election, with another politician, ho hum.
you also have republicans whose only news source is fox news, and while they do better than most, it sorely lacks.
admittedly i dont know as much about politics as i would prefer, but what extra information i have from reading here is too much for the average republican. they gloss over, fade out... or worse think i am a tin foil hat kook because what i am saying has not made main news sources;)
as much as a find obama repulsive and woefully ignorant, whoever ran his campaign is brilliant. we need to look carefully at how he reached so many that normally would have no information. since his was the first campaign to use this tactic there ar bugs, so we can improve on it, but we have got to get moving, the dude is still campaigning!

OK on the last point, i got to stand up for tina faye in your comparison to rodeo mama. at least faye had a few nice things about palin, no so with rodeo!
