Thank you for citing this great composition. Mancini was so prolific, he is very underappreciated. But his music is everywhere. From Moon River to Peter Gunn, he could, and did, write great music for all occasions.
Sanford and Son. :-P

Fireball XL-5?
I was only half serious about Sanford and Son, wow, #3. My old Master Chief always said it should be the Constellation’s breakaway song.
To Victory at Sea #1 in my book add Civil War and Cosmos.
NO one mentioned “green acres” I wonder why?
Without a doubt, the best themesong ever is the themesong to “Peter Gunn”. better known as the background music in the old arcade video game “spy hunter”.

This one shoulda been a themesong for something...

Great thread!
Okay, I’m uh - - over 50 - - and I probably have a better perspective on TV themes than the author. I just went through my massive catalogue of TV theme MP3s and I noted about 35 - 40 that COULD have made the list but did not. However, I will list here only the most glaring omissions. (The first three are totally inexcusable):
1. Perry Mason
2. Taxi
3. Star Trek (original)

4. Dragnet
5. Petticoat Junction
6. The Avengers
7. Miami Vice
8. Car 54 Where Are You
9. The Honeymooners
10. The Rifleman
11. Dallas
12. Rugrats
13. Flipper
14. Surfside 6
15. Donna Reed
Before I even clicked on this thread I thought to myself about only ONE theme song, and thought that it better be right up there on the list: Miami Vice.
It came to mind immediately and naturally.
Clearly the list is operating off the mistaken premise that most memorable=best.
My personal faves:
Jonny Quest - Hoyt Curtin brilliance
The Avengers
I Spy
Wild Wild West
Man From UNCLE (I’m partial to the Season 2 arrangement)
Lost in Space (I like both the first, dramatically mysterious theme as well as the more energetic, actiony second one used for the final season)
Among more recent entries:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Star Trek: Voyager
Legend (short-lived Richard Dean Anderson series)
And I add my voice to those who consider Three’s Company’s theme an audio atrocity.
Could list a lot of classics (”Peter Gunn,” anyone?), but my current favorite is “King of the Hill.” Here’s how to play it yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnIURGHakNM
Forget Miami Vice. What about Hogan’s Heroes?Or ABC”s Wide World of Sports?Or...MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!(....all my rowdy friends are here for MONDAY NIGHT!)
DITTO on Underdog.
One pop into my head the other day the theme song from Greatest American Hero.
You’re right - Mr. Lucky was the best. I STILL listen to it on a CD of Mancini’s greatest hits.
My personal favorite is the theme to Perry Mason.
