There should be absolutely no such thing as a hate crime anyway. It is crime, pure and simple, regardless of motives.

I agree. But that wasn't my point. The point is that since there is a category the Feds track it. It shows how really small the amount of “hate crimes” are and how they are overblown for the special victims so promoted by the left.
