Secretary Of State Clinton?
IBD Editorials ^ | November 17, 2008

Transition: Odds are improving that President Obama will name Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. It's an unexpected move and not without risk. But she brings significant strengths and might just be a solid choice.

During the primary campaign, Sen. Clinton was the first candidate to call attention to the naivete of Obama's foreign policy approach. When asked at a debate if they would negotiate with dictators without precondition in the first year of administration, Obama said he would, and Clinton said she wouldn't.

Then she pointed out the pitfalls: "I think it is not that you promise a meeting at a high level before you know what the intentions are," she said. "I don't want to be used for propaganda purposes. I don't want to make a bad situation even worse." Dictators would get no teas at the White House "until we know better what the way forward would be," the former first lady said.

Such prudent thinking not only won over her audience that night, it may have won over Obama too. As the campaign wore on, he moved his position closer to hers. Now, he may be asking her to be in charge of foreign policy.

Clinton's pragmatic toughness could be a significant asset to the Obama administration. There are other good candidates for the top diplomatic spot, including Sen. Richard Lugar and Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. But Clinton's no lightweight.

Brilliant! She has to do what he tells her and she’s no longer in the senate to bug him. Meanwhile he can FIRE her and send her off to political oblivion!

Its funny how the Secretary of State position was deemed so unimportant when occupied by the first Black Female Secretary of State, Condi Rice.

Hillary is now going to be nothing more than White Rice.

Has Hillry repaid her loan to herself yet? Little free advertising always helps repay a debt.

This is quite a puff piece for Hillary. She'd be perfect for the State Department, right?

If she leaves her Senate seat, she's at the mercy of Obama, he can fire her as soon as he wants. But then, her Senate seat was supposed to be a launching pad for the presidency, and that didn't work out. This will be very interesting, because Obama came out of the Chicago machine and wiped Hillary out of what was to be her annointed candidacy.

....this is pretty clear to me....BHO didn’t clean up Hil’s campaign debt like he promised so he throws her a bone....Bill tags along with Hil around the world and cuts deals with foreigners to erase the $30 mil they owe from the campaign....this is “change”?

What!? Hillary's strengths are like 'Bammy's accomplishments - just go ahead and try to name one.

Will anybody in the Senate have the cojones to challenge her confirmation or demand review of her husband’s shady dealings - heck, let’s just look at those in the past eight years? Bring on the questions about Ron Burkle’s f*** jet that Clinton has been partying on since he left the presidency.

Her VAST foreign policy experience makes her more than qualified for SECSTATE. She’ll fit right in with the likes of Madeleine Albright, Warren Christopher, Edmund Muskie, Cy Vance, and Dean Rusk. They didn’t know crap about foreign policy either.

I like outlandish claims as well as the best of us. Here’s one. “Obama was not born an American. Kenya perhaps as speculated. This is why he became president elect. The enemies of the USA know this, have proof, and are concealing it. Obama has received hundreds of millions of dollars for his campaign because of this. This proof is the extortion ace up the sleeve. When he is sworn in as president, America will, for the first time, not have a president of the USA. For he will be a puppet of some other force.”

I have always thought he might try this. If he does, I give him serious credit for being smart. If he isn't planning on doing that, He's really stupid. In the mean time, Michelle Obama needs to keep an eye on Bill Clinton when he's in the White house at the same time her kids are there too.

I saw fear in a liberal’s eyes today. I often toy with him. I told him that this rumor is BS, that Obama will pick either Richardson or Kerry for SoS. Then I told him that being as Clinton is a lawyer, she would probably be given the AG position.

I don’t know who was scared more, him or me. It is not all that far fetched.

With all the clintonoids in the 0bama admin, we're sure to have a pipeline of info coming out of the White House. And not all of it good...

I dont see the ‘change’ in Washington that he promised. It seems like he is filling positions with the old Washington. I am waiting to see if he offers Jimmy Carter a position or maybe use him as an Economic Advisor.

I’m still trying to figure out why Hillary would want to be Sec of State. It gives her nothing.

I don’t think Clinton is a good candidate for State for many reasons, not the least of which is the conflict of interest her hubby’s dealings present. Such as:
