It is not surprising that you think this since it is not remarked about much but the first wife was alive as of a month ago. See the reference in her daughter's recent column: “

Not to say that Newt's behavior was very attractive, but the couple had been separated for two years and negotiating a divorce when Mrs. Gingrich went into the hospital. Newt called and asked to visit and brought a legal pad with points they had to settle for the divorce agreement. Mrs. Gingrich very properly kicked him out. The stories that are told make it seem that she got sick and Newt came to the hospital and surprised her with a divorce subpoena, which is not true.
