If this is true, then why didn’t the moderates vote for McCain who is a moderate?

Exactly. All the GOP moderates abandoned the party when it was struggling and they endorsed and voted for Obama. We conservatives, much maligned, kept the faith with our party's candidate even though we heartily loathed him. The truth is if it wasn't for conservatives voting for McCain as much as they did, his loss would have been far greater. Without conservatives, the GOP has no future. The moderates aren't certainly going to make a case for a warmed over GOP when voters can go for the Democrats instead.
