BOSTON – Turns out that when it comes to biting White House visitors, President Bush's dog Barney is a repeat offender.

Boston Celtics public relations director Heather Walker said Friday that Barney bit her wrist and drew blood as she tried to pat the Scottish terrier in September after a White House ceremony honoring the team's 17th NBA championship.

"It was very strange. I didn't expect him to bite me," Walker told The Associated Press.

“My dogs are trained! I do not joke about dog bites.”

Plenty of people on this thread are.

Your home isn’t the White House. The White House has a lot of people coming and going. The dog needs to be taken back to crawford or back into the Bush residence.

Who usually loses when a dog is poorly trained? The dog does. Either it bites someone or much more likely has behavior problems which lead to a trip to the pound. Dogs are great pets but take a lot of time.

I know many people who crate their dogs 12 hours a day and somehow expect a perfectly happy animal.

Yes, that’s what I am expecting.

A pit bull, with a bad disposition.

“Most dogs I have met seem to have a sense of humour”

Yeah the one I met as a kid as it came tearing out to the street had one. It was really funny when it jumped up and sank its teeth into my back and let its body weight drag its front teeth through 12 inches of my back.

HA HA yeah that was a real knee slapper.

I “inherited” a young half black lab/half rottie when my daughter moved away. They didn’t pay too much attention to her. She would get really ticked at my daughter after they would take her home after a visit to “grandma’s house.” She would jump on her bed and urinate in it.

When I got this dog after my daughter moved, there were no problems. She has been very well behaved and is my girl. It is funny to see her go into her “rottie” stance when a strange someone comes close to her “mama” (I was upgraded.)

When my son came home from the Marines, he had a hat on, and she didn’t recognize him. She growled and lunged at him, trying to protect me from him until she remembered his scent.

The goof likes to sit in my lap like a baby. Must be the lab half. LOL

Yes, they do, and they know a fraud when they smell one. Somehow I don’t think the President did too much reprimanding of Barney.

LOL You’re funny. Do you frequently shoot people for ringing your doorbell?

We have pure-breds with AKC obedience titles on both but if they feel threatened, they let you know about it.

Our pure breds are very much the same way, but they are toys and toy breeds are very different than sporting and working breeds. Our last dog was an AKC lab and she was a completely different temperament. Didn't know a stranger. Understood begging manners. Was friendly to all other dogs. The little guys, OTOH, will take every advantage to assert their dominance and behave much better when introduced from our arms at eye level rather than from the floor. It was a matter of figuring out what works and calm patience while correcting them. And they are very smart.

Quite true. In our experience, and in seeing how people react to our little guys at dog shows, they like eye level the best.

And in response to some on the thread, there is a big difference between training a dog to be aggressive and training a dog to protect. Michael Vick trained dogs one way. That way would be abusive.

No dog should be ever be crated even half that time!.

A If my grandchildren are visiting, and eating yummy treats, my dogs are either in the bedroom, lounging on the bed, watching the animal channel, or in their crates until the food is consumed. The children are taught not to tease the dogs, nor eat in front of them. Our dogs are trained to wait until we have finished eating, and only sometimes do they get treats after the food is consumed.

If the grandkids are running around in the yard, screaming and acting like little banshees, my dogs are on the leash. (Malinois have very strong “prey” drive, and little kids running and screaming can trigger that in certain breeds.)

But, when my 8 month old grandson was here, sitting on his mother’s lap, our dogs were so tender and sensitive, creeping up on their tummies, gently licking his little hands, and behaving themselves like loving and tender parents.

That said, it is the height of stupidity to ever let dogs and children alone, unsupervised. Leashes and crates have their uses, but should never be abused for the convenience of the owner.

Not usually, driftdiver. That is why we have good farm/protection dogs.

I just can’t quite figure out why you don’t get it, and have such an attitude about dogs. I don’t think you are a good candidate for canine companionship, so please do not inflict yourself on some poor dog.

They are smarter than GSDs, but don’t tell the GSDs that, or their owners for that matter!

I had a paper round as a kid,one house I delivered to had a scotch terrier, as long as i backed out of the driveway it was a stand off, as soon as I turned my back to hop on my bike he nailed me in the ankle. He was there every day so I reckon he enjoyed the diversion on an otherwise boring day of waiting for the next victim
