McCain’s parents were both military...that should be enough.

Maybe it should be, but under the law 72 years ago, it was not. The law is very clear.

Now the senate danced around the issue by declaring with a sense of the Senate that he was eligible. The SSB, has no affect of law. For all we know if McCain was elected this issue would have returned to bite us.

According to Leo - Obama and McCain were not eligble. He said the Senate resolution about it months ago was an outrage. Leo said McCain was a great patriot but the Constitution would deny McCain and Obama.

Actually it's irrelevant, what's important is that both his parents were US Citizens. The military aspect doesn't enter in to it. The provision that "is clear" did not apply when both parents are US Citizens who had resided in the US. The change in the law shortley after McCain was born covered the children born to US Citizens living in the canal zone who did not meet the residency requirements, (Not quite the same ones that Obama's mother failed to meet, and which would make him not a natural born citizen, if he was not born in the US) because that situtation was covered by other, earlier, provisions of the law.

By the time those laws were passed, many citizens had grown up in the Canal zone, perhaps having been born there to one or more US Citizen parents, but who did not meet the then existing "residence requirements.
