As a capitalist I'm not averse to Google’s having made lots of money, but as an engineer, I was a bit concerned that there was no remarkable innovation behind their financial success. Google is an advertising company. I liked the comment by the Clusty owners, and have used them without knowing about that. One of the pioneering search engines, and a web crawler which I believe was used by Google in the early days (someone will correct me if I'm mistaken) is Alta Vista. It is my default search engine. It has as clean an interface as Google. I have compared seaches on obscure topics and find Alta Vista offering less redundancy and garbage. It seems (an important qualifier) as quick as Google. Some of the obsure engines such as Dogpile take a bit more time.
There is an innovative search interface called Ujiko which I sometimes use. I believe it is based upon the Yahoo search engine, but try it and you will see both why it is not for everyone, but may also see its benefits. The colors it offers are frankly yucky, but its categorization capabilities are very powerful. It has no advertising.

O stop. It is never good when any American company fails or is having problems. It is suppose to be our role to help our fellow Americans.

The stock might or might not be high but this is for investors and board to work out.

So did the investors and board get a vote on Goog CEO endorsing O?

NO!

I heard Katherine Albright on Coast to Coast last night. She spoke about how Google is tracking every single thing every person has ever googled and is reporting it to the government. In seconds, they can retrieve your searches and construct a profile for the government on you, based upon your searches. It was extremely alarming. I went to her website, but could find nothing on the topic, though. However, coasttocoast.com did have the following link posted as a recent revelation of how they are applying the technology for “good”, for tracking the flu, based on people googling “flu”. Did anyone else catch that on CTC on Tues night?

I would use another search engine like Dogpile.com.

And, no, I don’t need a tinfoil hat. Mine is working just fine.

This site uses Googles search results but they don’t get credit for the hits and there’s no ad links on which they thrive:

What about the better engine built by people who left Gurgle?

I believe that would be Cuil (pronounced cool). What's cool about Cuil is they don't keep track of your searches.

Yes it is Culi.com. The lady and man who started it were the main Google architects. I wonder if they are Libs or Obots. If they do not archive your searches then I like them.

But, dogpile USES google as one of it’s search engines:

“This is exactly what Dogpile metasearch does-it brings together the best results from the Internet’s top search engines, including Google, Yahoo! Search, Live Search, Ask.com, About, MIVA, LookSmart, and more.”

So how is using dogpile better?

I’ve already made them my default search engine. I haven’t done many searches since last night, so I can’t give any feedback on the quality of searches. I’ll let you know.
