The Wall Street Journal dedicated an op-ed page today to the question, "What Does the GOP Do Next," with brief essays from various conservatives, including former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. Steele's prescription for the GOP: Become the party of the future by emulating Ronald Reagan. Essentially, Steele says, the party's problem is that it betrayed its principles in order to win and ended up losing instead.
So the party needs to follow the example of Reagan, who "made it cool to be a Republican."
"It wasn't just his specific policies, but the timeless truths he so eloquently gave voice to, and upon which his policies were based. That's the Republican Party we must re-establish."
Steele, who has recently been criticizing the GOP for not doing enough to reach out to minorities, says times have changed and the party needs to adapt. But he said the one thing it can't do is change its principles.

Maybe he can explain to you why he is pro-choice and pro-affirmative action.
Obviously I'm missing something.
Where do you get the idea that a man who is opposed to overturning Roe v. Wade is "pro life"?
I know he’s pro-AA, but what makes you say he’s pro-choice?
A: My desire is that we follow what stare decisis is at this point.
He’s definitely not a Sarah Palin on life, but I believe he at least tips toward the pro-life side of the dial? My sense is he’s ‘okay enough’ on that issue, but AA is the killer.
Yeah, I can understand that if that’s the breaker issue for you that he doesn’t come in strong enough on that count.
Steele is the epitome of neo-con.
let’s just hope he’s not another Colon Bowel.
He is NOT pro-choice.
Anyone who does not favor the overturning of Roe v. Wade is PRO ABORTION.
Period.
That makes Michael Steele PRO-ABORTION.
I had high hopes for Michael Steele until I saw that quote. I will not support him and if he becomes RNC chair, I will not be a Republican.
You're right. He's PRO ABORTION.
A: My desire is that we follow what stare decisis is at this point.
Anyone who thinks we should continue to uphold Roe v Wade is in favor of continuing the holocaust of abortion which has resulted in the loss of an entire generation of Americans.
Absolutely, categorically WRONG
He has always been very strongly pro-life.
“...at this point.”
Is he not simply being realistic AT THIS POINT?
I can’t find Steele’s abortion quote, but I trust P-M on the issue. If he says Steele is pro-abortion, then Steele has lost me automatically.
LIFE is the most basic right. If anyone wishes to diminish it at any level for any reason, then they’ve started down a slippery slope.
Life is sacred. Period.
Without Life no other right is of any consequence whatsoever.
Hopefully, Steele has misstated or will convert. He should realize the holocaust directed at black babies is preeminent evidence of living racism in America.
The next thing the GOP should do is get out of the way.
I am beginning to think he is an another enigma. Two examples - one recent, one old. Recent - before the election he was asked about the black vote going to Obama and white racism. Instead of explaining how he won all white majority counties in Maryland and lost because blacks would not support a black Republican, he went with the media case of white racism. Old - I heard a speech by him in front of a black audience and he was went into the ebonics speak. When he is on FNC and other shows like that, he drops the ebonics speak.
Bottom line, I don't know what he is or where he really stands.
