A battle to take the reins of the Republican National Committee is taking off between former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Maryland Lieutenant Gov. Michael Steele.
Republicans close to each man say they are intent on ousting Mike Duncan when his tenure ends in January and to insert themselves to articulate a counter-agenda to President-elect Barack Obama´s administration.
A bevy of backers for each man, neither of whom is an RNC member, have been burning up the phone lines and firing off e-mails as they try to sway the 168 RNC members in the wake of the second consecutive drubbing of Republicans at the polls.
"The Republican National Committee has to ask itself if it wants someone who has successfully led a revolution," Randy Evans, Gingrich confidante and personal attorney based in Atlanta, told The Washington Times on Monday.
Neither man seems inclined to give way to the other.

My vote’s for Ann Coulter.
I’d rather see Newt. We absolutely need a strategy, and I’d trust Newt to create one.
Newt, hands down.
This party is too far back and Steele doesn’t have the experience in the trenches that Newt does; he is tanned, fit and ready to lead this party.
Show me a high-profile gunslinger with PERFECT conservative credentials and I’ll back that horse, but until then Gingrich is the best we’ve got.
Excellent news.
Both men are fine, but I’ll take Newt, with Steels as his deputy.
We need both men in the RNC.
Get rid of the Bush/McCain amnesty loving fanatics who are running the RNC right now.
Racism is now officially over. NEVER let a Dem spout that crap again. Obama is President, they have reached the mountaintop, there is no more racism.
Here’s a test, run the names of the potential candidates by McCain. If he doesn’t like them, pick that person.
Steele is a good man. Ive met him several times. I dont think hes in Gingrichs league in terms of vision and leadership. What we need now is leadership, vision, and strategy. Not to say that Steele wouldnt be up to the job, but I think Gingrich would do a much better job.
The media might like Steele better, but pleasing the media got us McCain, and look how far that got the party.
And for all of those who say Gingrich believes in global warming, Steele is anti-capital punishment. So neither of them is perfect.
I’m all for firing up ole sparky. But, if those are the two criteria. I’ll take Steele. Bowing to global warming whackos will cost us more money than housing death-rowe residents.
Concur with your assessment and conclusion.
“that would be NEWT.”
For sure. Leave Steele in his government position and put Newt back to work. And this time, tell the MSM to go talk to Willy Jefferson-F of LA (F=Felon)
I would prefer more choices myself. We need someone with impeccable conservative credentials who also knows something about party-building (or rebuilding in this case), fundraising, winning elections, and dealing effectively with the media. He also needs to have lots of energy and to look at this as a full-time job. This sounds much more like Newt, but he has his own issues (e.g. global warming — a huge problem). What is Karl Rove doing these days?
Actually, RNC Chair is not an “idea” place. It is a brawler, neanderthal place. The Chair has to battle more than theorize. I’m not saying he doesn’t need to be smart, but Newt is way to intellectual and not nearly enough cut-throat.
What?
Well said...for a n00b.
Read Tom Coburn’s book “Breach of Trust.” That will tell you everything you need to know about Newt.
Agree, esp. on “freshness” factor.
The best RNC Chair in my memory is Haley Barbour. He was combative and forceful, but always with a smile.
I second your post. I was not for Newt for POTUS but for RNC chair, he is the perfect man.
Exactly. A take-no-prisoners Lee Atwater type.
Newt would represent an old dog with new tricks over at the RNC. DON’T eat our new seed corn like Steele, who should be runnning for office.
