EXCLUSIVE: Gingrich, Steele duel for RNC chair
The Washington Times ^ | November 11, 2008 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 11/10/2008 2:46:59 PM PST by BAW

A battle to take the reins of the Republican National Committee is taking off between former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Maryland Lieutenant Gov. Michael Steele.

Republicans close to each man say they are intent on ousting Mike Duncan when his tenure ends in January and to insert themselves to articulate a counter-agenda to President-elect Barack Obama´s administration.

A bevy of backers for each man, neither of whom is an RNC member, have been burning up the phone lines and firing off e-mails as they try to sway the 168 RNC members in the wake of the second consecutive drubbing of Republicans at the polls.

"The Republican National Committee has to ask itself if it wants someone who has successfully led a revolution," Randy Evans, Gingrich confidante and personal attorney based in Atlanta, told The Washington Times on Monday.

Neither man seems inclined to give way to the other.

Either would be very astute.

I like them both but this job was made for NEWT. We are in a war and need someone who has proven results... that would be NEWT.

Some different strengths. Too bad they can’t team up some way, but if I can just have one I think we need a Newtonian strategist. We also need someone like Steele to inspire and implement across the country. Again, too bad if they can’t find a way to work together.

Yes, make Steele his right hand man. Newt is the bomb.

I like both of them and would definitely be happy with either one as RNC chair.

Newt WAS good. Aside from his personal issues, he went soft on Conservatism at one time. We don’t need people who go wobbly.

Steele is smart, personable, African-American; Gingrich is smart, smarmy, Caucasian. Steele would have more credibility in articulating an alternative to Obama-doctrine.

Steele is a good man. I’ve met him several times. I don’t think he’s in Gingrich’s league in terms of vision and leadership. What we need now is leadership, vision, and strategy. Not to say that Steele wouldn’t be up to the job, but I think Gingrich would do a much better job.

The media might like Steele better, but pleasing the media got us McCain, and look how far that got the party.

And for all of those who say “Gingrich believes in global warming”, Steele is anti-capital punishment. So neither of them is perfect.

This is a tough one. Don’t have doubts about Lt. Gov. Steele’s conservatism but he’s dull as corn flakes. Speaker Gingrich has the ideas but his flirtations with Hillary and Dirty Nan should bother rock ribbed conservatives.

love newt..but my vote is with Steele

he is fresh, with some new ideas i think...

and he understands that the common perception that the Republican party is made up of only rich wrinkly white men needs to be attacked..sorry for those who don't agree but it is true.

I want someone who breathes fire and who plays blood-sport: a Lee Atwater-type.

I don't know if Newt has it in him, and I know little about Steele.
