EXCLUSIVE: Gingrich, Steele duel for RNC chair
The Washington Times ^ | November 11, 2008 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 11/10/2008 2:46:59 PM PST by BAW

A battle to take the reins of the Republican National Committee is taking off between former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Maryland Lieutenant Gov. Michael Steele.

Republicans close to each man say they are intent on ousting Mike Duncan when his tenure ends in January and to insert themselves to articulate a counter-agenda to President-elect Barack Obama´s administration.

A bevy of backers for each man, neither of whom is an RNC member, have been burning up the phone lines and firing off e-mails as they try to sway the 168 RNC members in the wake of the second consecutive drubbing of Republicans at the polls.

"The Republican National Committee has to ask itself if it wants someone who has successfully led a revolution," Randy Evans, Gingrich confidante and personal attorney based in Atlanta, told The Washington Times on Monday.

Neither man seems inclined to give way to the other.

I'd support Newt IF he backs off his global warming nonsense and actually treats this as a fight for the life of America...and take no prisoners! If he does that and actually calls obomber a socialist, I'd be first in line to support him.

This is wahr!!!! (apologies to james carville's cajun accent)

They are both good. I would like to see Steele stay out of this and run for office later. I would beat the streets for him in a heartbeat.

Being “there for us” while on a book tour doesn’t really count.

I like them both but this job was made for NEWT. We are in a war and need someone who has proven results... that would be NEWT.

This is the perfect job for Gingrich. He needs to put conservatism back to the forefront of the Republican party and purge every last bit of wishy washy, get along with them, country club, genteel , fat dumb and happy political hack, RINOism from the party.

Either one would work for me.

I would make MY final decision if I were "them" on who had the most:

ENERGY & ENTHUSIASUM TO WORK REALLY HARD;

SALES ABILITY;

ABILITY TO SELL MESSAGES IN REPEATABLE SOUNDBITES (so everyday Americans can repeat the message easily to their friends/family);

and

ABILITY TO SURROUND HIMSELF WITH REAL EVERYDAY AMERICANS AS WELL AS THOSE WITH POWER TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.

Steele would have more credibility in articulating an alternative to Obama-doctrine.

Bingo!

Being RNC chair is a lot about strategy, picking the best candidates, getting campaigns started, learning how to stay on message...Ideological purity isn’t necessarily required.

can we have co-chairs? newt lays the strategy groundwork, they both communicate it to the public and party.

Anyone knows w hat Duncan looks like? I don’t recall seeing him during the elections, however, I recall seeing Mehlman on tv or listening to him on the radio when he was at the helm of the RNC.

Didn’t Newt want to cosponsor Hillary’s Health Care Plan?

Didn’t Newt support “illegal amnesty”?

Didn’t Newt support “global warming”?

Just asking, I’m not sure memory serves me right.

Leadership and credibility are required. I think they would both be ok, but given Newt’s past, I give Steele a shot.

Either one would get my vote, but I would prefer Newt takes it.

He’s more devious and experienced at fighting, and leading the fight, against the enemy within, his recent love affair with the hildebeast excepted, and, to be honest, I’d still like to see Steele run on a National ticket.

Being a Marylander I’m a huge Steele fan but Newt can go for the jugular and Mike’s too nice.

Steele could also criticize Obama without worrying about the “racist!” retort.
