BLS: "Mass" (at least 50) layoff events SURGED in January

—Purple Avenger

ZeroHedge has the scoop and some very scary looking trend charts

Gosh, I wonder why consumer confidence unexpectedly plunged recently? Normally, I'd blame it on the introduction of some crap product like New Coke, a Tylenol cyanide scare, etc, but today I got nothing. The recovery is cruising along nicely, the deficit is well under control, gas prices are expected to spike over $3/gal by summer, and Obama want to glom your 401K assets and turn it into a government paid annuity.

What's not to like? Its all good. GOOD. Mass layoffs just seem kinda anti-state, counter-revolutionary. Perhaps some nice show trials will lift our mood? Everyone like show trials, right?

Know what'll fix mass layoffs?  ObamaCare.

I was gonna say more cowbell.

That's really, really good.

Video: An Inconvenient Tax!

The INCOME TAX was NEVER principally about REVENUE. It was about sucking the excess FRAUDS out of circulation and about behavior modification and allowing the political elite to reward their friends and punish their enemies.

THE HISTORY OF THE SIXTEENTH AMENDMENT
by Dr. W. Cleon Skousen
Strange as it may seem, the Sixteenth Amendment (which gave the American people the affliction of confiscatory income taxes) was never supposed to have passed. It was introduced by the Republicans as part of a political scheme to trick the Democrats, but it backfired.

Here’s the story.

The Founding Fathers had rejected income taxes (or any other direct taxes) unless they were apportioned to each state according to population. Nevertheless, an income tax was levied during the Civil War and upheld by the Supreme Court on the somewhat tenuous reasoning. When another income tax was enacted in 1893, the Supreme Court found it unconstitutional. In connection with the two Pollock case reviewed in 1895, the Court declared that the act violated Article I, section 9 of the Constitution.

During the following decade, however, the complexion of the Court changed somewhat, and so did public sentiment. There was great social unrest and the idea of a tax to “soak the rich” began to take root among liberals in both major parties. Several times the Democrats introduced bills to provide a tax on higher incomes but each time the conservative branch of the Republican party killed it in the Senate. The Democrats used this as evidence that the Republicans were the “party of the rich” and should be thrown out of power, forcing President William Howard Taft to acknowledge in political speeches that income taxes might be all right “in principle”, but it was well known among close associates that he was strongly opposed to such a tax.

The Bailey Bill

In April 1909, Senator Joseph W. Bailey, a conservative Democrat from Texas who was also opposed to income taxes, decided to further embarrass the Republicans by forcing them to openly oppose an income tax bill similar to those which had been introduced in the past. He introduced his bill expecting it to get the usual opposition. However, to his amazement, Teddy Roosevelt and a growing element of liberals in the Republican party came out in favor of the bill and it looked as though it was going to pass.

Not only was Bailey surprised, but Senator Nelson W. Aldrich of Rhode Island, the Republican floor leader, frantically met with Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of
Massachusetts and President Taft to work out a strategy to demolish the Bailey tax bill. Their own party was split too widely to permit a direct confrontation, so the strategy was to pull a political end run. They announced that they favored an income tax but only if it were an amendment to the Constitution. Within their own circle, they discussed how it might get approval of the House and the Senate, but they were quite certain that it could be defeated in the more conservative states-three-fourths of which were required in order to ratify the amendment.

Thus, the Democrats were off guard when President Taft unexpectedly sent a message to Congress on June 16th, 1909, recommending the passage of a consitutional amendment to legalize federal income tax legislation.

The strategy threw the liberals into an uproar. At the very moment when their Bailey bill was about to pass, the Republicans were coming out for an amendment to the Constitution which would probably be defeated by the states.

Reaction to the Amendment

Congressman Cordell Hull (D-Tenn., and later Secretary of State under FDR) saw exactly what was happening. He took the floor to excoriate the Republican leaders. Said he:

“No person at all familiar with the present trend of national legislation will seriously insist that these same Republican leaders are over-anxious to see the country adopt an income tax...What powerful influence, what new light and deep seated motive suddenly moves these political veterans to ‘about face’ and pretend to warmly embrace this doctrine which they have heretofore uniformly denounced?” {1}

He went on to expose what he considered to be a political trick. He needn’t have been so concerned. The slogan of “soak the rich” automatically aroused Pavlovian salivation among politicians both in Washington and the states. The Senate approved the Sixteenth Amendment with an astonishing unanimity of 77-0! The House approved it by a vote of 318-14.

When Republican Congressman Sereno E. Payne of New York, who had introduced the amendment in the House, saw that this end run was turning into a winning touchdown for the opposition, he was horrified. He went to the floor and openly denounced the bill he had sponsored. Said he:

“As to the general policy of an income tax, I am utterly opposed to it. I believe with Gladstone that it tends to make a nation of liars. I believe it is the most easily concealed of any tax that can be laid, the most difficult of enforcement, and the hardest to collect; that it is, in a word, a tax upon the income of honest men and an exemption, to a greater or lesser extent, of the income of rascals; and so I am opposed to any income tax in time of peace...I hope that if the Constitution is amended in this way the time will not come when the American people will ever want to enact an income tax except in time of war.” {2}

The end run of the Republican leadership did indeed backfire. State after state ratified this “soak the rich” amendment until it went into full force and effect on
February 12, 1913 (Ed.note: Mr. Bill Benson, in his book “The Law That Never Was” has since documented massive...and outcome changing...federal interference in the certification of the votes of the individual state legislatures. The votes for and against from Kentucky, for instance, were switched by then Secretary of State Philander Knox.)

Did it Soak the Rich?

Certain writers such as Alfred Hinsey Kelly and Winfred Audif Harbison (authors of “The American Constitution: Origins” [New York: Norton, 1970]) rejoiced that this
amendment “shifted the growing burden of federal finance to the wealthy.”{3} Nothing could be further from the truth!

The wealthy, especially the super-wealthy, had anticipated this development and had created a clever device to protect their riches. It was called a “charitable
foundation”. The idea was to cosign the ownership of wealth, including stocks and securities, to a foundation and then get Congress and the state legislatures to declare all such charitable institutions exempt from taxes. By setting up boards which were under the control of these wealthy benefactors they could escape the tax and still maintain control over the disposition of these fabulous fortunes.

Long before the federal income tax was in place, multimillionaires such as John D. Rockefeller (who once said “I want to own nothing and control everything”), J.P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie had their foundations set up and operating. The next step was to make certain that the new tax bill passed by Congress contained a provision
specifically exempting their treasure houses from taxation.

The tax bill which the Sixteenth Amendment authorized was introduced as House Resolution 3321 on October 3, 1913. It turned out to be somewhat of a legislative potpourri for tax attorneys, accountants and the federal courts. In the ensuing years, untold millions of dollars have been spent trying to figure out exactly what this tax law, and those which followed it, were intended to provide. However,
tucked away in its inward parts was that precious key which safely locked up the riches of the super wealthy. Here are the magic words under Section 2, paragraph G:

“Provided, however, that nothing in this section shall apply...to any corporation or association organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific or educational purposes.” All of the foundations of the
super-rich were designed to qualify under one or more of these categories.

How the Cute Little Monkey Grew into a Gorilla

When the first income tax was sent out to the people, the Congress chortled confidently that “all good citizen will willingly and cheerfully support and sustain this, the fairest and cheapest of all taxes.” That was the cute little monkey part. After all, the first tax ranged from merely 1% on the first $20,000 of taxable income and was only 7% on incomes above $500,000. Who could complain?(Ed. note: In 1994 “dollars” that $20K is now over $250K and the $500K is today over $6 million!)

At first, scarcely anyone did. Little did they know that before the tinkering was done in Washington, this system would be described by many Americans as the most
unfair and expensive tax in the history of the nation. Within a few years, it had become the principal source of income for the federal government.

In the beginning, hardly anyone had to file a tax return because the tax did not apply to the vast majority of America’s work-a-day citizens. For example, in 1939, 26 years after the Sixteenth Amendment was adopted, only 5% of the population, counting both taxpayers and their dependents, was required to file returns. Today, more than 80% of the population is under the income tax.

Withholding Taxes

The collection process was greatly facilitated in 1943 by a device created by FDR to pay the costs of WWII. It was called “withholding from wages and salaries”. In other words, the tax was collected at the payroll window before it was even due to be paid by the taxpayer. Economists point out that this device, more than any other single factor, shifted the tax from its original design as a tax on the wealthy to a tax on the masses—mostly the middle class. Investigations disclosed that the truly wealthy pay relatively little or no income tax at all.

Some idea of how the cute little monkey grew into a gorilla is perceived from the fact that nearly half of all federal revenue is now raised by income taxes. Furthermore, the higher brackets are literally confiscatory—but by “due process”, of course, under the Sixteenth Amendment. Rates have been as high as 94% in the upper brackets during wartime, and even in peacetime they are presently 50%. (Ed. note: This piece was apparently written when the top rates were higher than in 1992. Not to worry, however: Watch for higher rates coming soon to an IRS office near you!) Medium income people up through the upper middle class pay between 12 & 35%. Nevertheless, at all levels it has become sufficiently burdensome to discourage the attainment of basic economic advantage which most Americans seek.

Weaknesses of the System

The most damaging aspect of the Sixteenth Amendment is the fact that it vitiated the unalienable rights provided in the 4th Amendment. This is the amendment which protects privacy—privacy of the home, business, personal papers and personal affairs of the private citizen. None of these are disturbed by a poll (head or capitation) tax because it is so much per person regardless of the circumstances, but when the tax is based on income, the IRS is assigned the most unpleasant task of making certain that everyone pays his fair share. This task is physically impossible without prying into the private papers, private business and personal affairs of the individual citizens. By any standard, it is a miserable assignment. Furthermore, it is impossible to run audits and surveys of all taxpayers and so the audits seldom check more than 2% of them.

There are many things wrong with this approach. Worst of all, it puts the government tax collectors in the gorilla role and intimidates citizens who are unlucky enough to be audited with the feeling that they are “victims” of an
unfair system.

The IRS also finds it difficult to avoid the attitude that each taxpayer is a cheat, even a criminal, who must somehow be cornered and caught. This has brought the structure of the entire income tax collection process into question.

For example, the underground economy of monetary transactions (which is conducted without records) is well known. It is estimated that losses in federal revenues from this underground economy are at least $100 billion per year. (Ed. note: Probably closer to $200-300 billion!) Obviously, this is not fair to those who are paying their share. Then there is an estimated $65 billion per year which is lost
because it is not reported. This is considered unfair. There is a lot of padding on expense accounts, which is estimated to reduce the tax total by another $18 billion.
Other operations, both legal and illegal, jumps the total up a few billion more.

There has also been extensive criticism of the prosecution of tax cases. The appeal is through a system of tax courts which are without juries. In order to get a tax case into a regular court where there is a jury, the citizen must pay the tax and then sue the government.

Thousands of complaints have also poured into the IRS concerning the tactics used by some of its agents. Citizens feel they are treated as criminals rather than suspects who are innocent until proven guilty.

Is there a better way? Here is one answer by a former head of the IRS.

A Former IRS Commissioner’s Statement

T. Coleman Andrews served as commissioner of IRS for nearly 3 years during the early 1950s. Following his resignation, he made the following statement:

“Congress [in implementing the Sixteenth Amendment] went beyond merely enacting an income tax law and repealed Article IV of the Bill of Rights, by empowering the tax collector to do the very things from which that article says we were to be secure. It opened up our homes, our papers and our effects to the prying eyes of government agents and set the stage for searches of our books and vaults and for
inquiries into our private affairs whenever the tax men might decide, even though there might not be any justification beyond mere cynical suspicion.

“The income tax is bad because it has robbed you and me of the guarantee of privacy and the respect for our property that were given to us in Article IV of the Bill of Rights. This invasion is absolute and complete as far as the amount of tax that can be assessed is concerned. Please remember that under the Sixteenth Amendment, Congress can take 100% of our income anytime it wants to. As a matter of fact, right now it is imposing a tax as high as 91%. This is downright confiscation and cannot be defended on any other grounds.

“The income tax is bad because it was conceived in class hatred, is an instrument of vengeance and plays right into the hands of the communists. It employs the vicious communist principle of taking from each according to his accumulation of the fruits of his labor and giving to others according to their needs, regardless of whether those needs are the result of indolence or lack of pride, self-respect,
personal dignity or other attributes of men.

“The income tax is fulfilling the Marxist prophecy that the surest way to destroy a capitalist society is by - _steeply graduated_ taxes on income and heavy levies upon the estates of people when they die.

As matters now stand, if our children make the most of their capabilities and training, they will have to give most of it to the tax collector and so become slaves of the government. People cannot pull themselves up by the bootstraps anymore because the tax collector gets the boots and the straps as well.

“The income tax is bad because it is oppressive to all and discriminates particularly against those people who prove themselves most adept at keeping the wheels of business turning and creating maximum employment and a high standard of living for their fellow men.

“I believe that a better way to raise revenue not only can be found but must be found because I am convinced that the present system is leading us right back to the very tyranny from which those, who established this land of freedom, risked their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to forever free themselves...”{4}

EDITOR’S NOTE:

THERE IS A BETTER WAY. GIVEN THE CURRENT LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING AMONG THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, AN IMMEDIATE RETURN TO THE FULLY CONSTITUTIONAL CAPITATION, HEAD OR POLL TAX
WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE AT THIS TIME. THERE IS, HOWEVER, AN INTERIM STEP: THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CURRENT INCOME TAX WITH A FEDERAL CONSUMPTION TAX LEVIED AT THE POINT OF PURCHASE.

IF YOU THINK THE CURRENT SYSTEM IS GREAT, DO NOTHING. I ASSURE YOU THAT IT WILL BECOME EVEN “GREATER” STILL. IF, HOWEVER, YOU BELIEVE THAT AMERICA IS TOO PRECIOUS TO BE FURTHER DAMAGED, BOTH ECONOMICALLY OR MORALLY, BY THE PRESENT SYSTEM, YOU HAD BETTER GET BUSY. YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS WILL THANK YOU.

WANT TO HELP? RUN “FAIRTAX” THROUGH A SEARCH ENGINE, FIND ONE OF THE GROUPS PROLIFERATING AROUND THIS ISSUE, PLUG IN AND WORK TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Two quotations for you to ponder while considering what level of involvement is right for you:

“As life is action and passion, it is required of a man that he be involved in the action and passion of his times lest he be judged NEVER TO HAVE LIVED.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

“We believe a man should be concerned about public as well as private affairs, for we regard the person who takes no part in politics not as merely uninterested but as useless.” –Pericles (Citizen of Athens)

So, you have at least two choices:

DO NOTHING – AS ADVOCATED BY SOME OF THE MINDLESS MYRMIDONS OF MEDIOCRITY OF AND WHEN YOU LEAVE THE PLANET – AND, DESPITE RUMORS TO THE CONTRARY, WE ALL DO – IT WILL BE AS THOUGH YOU’D NEVER BEEN HERE (i.e., USELESS) or
DO SOMETHING!

Join with the several millions of Americans who are ready to make this essential change happen by joining one of the growing number of grass-roots organizations now working for this important change in the way we do business in what used to be the “…land of the free and the home of the brave…”

We may never have another shot at ridding ourselves of a tax system an ostensibly free people ought never to have tolerated in the first place. We can spend a few bucks (thanks to the same gang of conspirators who ALLEGEDLY saddled us with the income tax, we no longer have any “dollars” but that’s another story)— now or pay later with even more of our wealth — AND our remaining freedoms.
The choice is yours!

More of What Killed Us. [JHoward]

We find ourselves in interesting times, those of reliving history while a pair of contemporary examples show us in real time the collective folly of the folly of the collective.  We have at our disposal growing numbers of deconstructions of the blight of left-leaning hyper-management of everything from where we live to what the weather should be, yet apparently we’re powerless to halt the slide.

What’s the first example?  The first is the impending ruin of Greece, the canary in the European socialist coal mine.

All welfare states face similar problems: burgeoning costs as populations age; an over-reliance on debt financing; and pressures to reduce borrowing that create pressures to cut welfare spending. High debt and the welfare state are at odds. It’s an open question whether the collision will cause social and economic turmoil.

Greece is the opening act in this drama; already, its budget problems have spawned street protests. By the numbers, Greece’s plight is acute. In 2009, its government debt — basically, the sum of past annual deficits — was 113 percent of its economy (gross domestic product, or GDP). The budget deficit for 2009 was 12.7 percent of GDP.

And the second?  The second is our own.  American federal debt is nearing 80% of GDP and the presses thunder on.  What’s next?

[Obama's] plan is expected to require most Americans to carry health insurance coverage, with federal subsidies to help many afford the premiums. Hewing close to a stalled Senate bill, it would bar insurance companies from denying coverage to people with medical problems or charging them more. A tax on high-cost health insurance plans objected to by House Democrats – and labor unions – would be scaled back. The expected price tag is around $1 trillion over 10 years.

If this passes, Washington DC will put a gun to the market’s head, drive sectors out of business, and then undoubtedly engage in another cycle of creative, progressive, policy-bound problem solving as bread and circuses lurch forward again.  Couldn’t they outlaw cancer instead?

There probably isn’t a federal social program that doesn’t lose money.  The debt is exploding through a dozen trillion dollars, but Medicare is already seventy five trillion dollars upside down.  The prescription drug plan and social Security are another one third of one hundred trillion dollars in the red.

With progressivism turning the country to shambles, and with examples of this failure here and abroad, what does Washington do?

It doubles down and speechifies.  More!

Is Obama A Lame Duck Already?

I would immodestly call your attention to my prediction of last July:

I think that Obama and his inner circle realize that if they can't get this [health care] package, or something very close to it, passed then they will be faced with the fact that Obama, barely more than a half-year into his first term, will basically be a lame duck.
Well, it didn't pass then and hasn't passed yet, and last November Joel Kotkin, executive editor of NewGeography.com and a distinguished presidential fellow in urban futures at Chapman University, concluded the same thing:
A good friend of mine, a Democratic mayor here in California, describes the Obama administration as "Moveon.org run by the Chicago machine." This combination may have been good enough to beat John McCain in 2008, but it is proving a poor way to run a country...

Report: White House offered GOP ex-Sen. Martinez a Stimulus Sunshine Sweetener

February 23, 2010 05:30 PM by Michelle Malkin

Hey, that White House pay-for-play/culture of corruption file just keeps getting fatter and fatter. This morning, it was the Romanoff and Sestak deals. This afternoon, Reid Wilson at Hotline On Call reports that Team Obama offered retired GOP Sen. Mel Martinez a little Florida favor in exchange for a Porkulus vote.

They were willing to pay. This time, however, the bribe-ee wasn’t willing to play: Soooooo, why is Martinez backing the business-as-usual Good Time Charlie Crist to replace him?19 Comments

"Mel Martinez was my senator and during the illegal immigrant amnesty event I called his office several times. I finally got exasperated with his aide one day and told her that Mr. Martinez is under an illusion that he is a Mexican Senator and not a United States Senator. She hung up on me and I gave up calling..."

The old “coconut” smear: Another white liberal bigmouth with race issues

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 23, 2010 04:05 PM

A few readers asked me why I hadn’t commented on MSNBC’s latest attack on the Tea Party as RAAAAACIST. Been there, done that. Over and over and over again. (The Dallas Tea Party posted an excellent rejoinder video here.)

The whole right-wingers-are-racist and minority-conservatives-are-race-traitors-wrapped-in-color thing is getting really, really old. Staler than last year’s Halloween candy, Diane Keaton’s wardrobe, and the Smothers Brothers’ show. It’s gotten so old that yet another white liberal bigmouth has now resurrected a smear I first heard in college: “Coconut.” (See here and here for my past musings on the vile bile minority conservatives have put up with over the years.)

Newsbusters reports:

MSNBC and CNBC contributor — and professed Charlie Crist admirer — Donny Deutsch used racially charged language on Monday night, smearing Republican senatorial candidate Marco Rubio as a “coconut.” Deutsch appeared on HLN’s Joy Behar Show and used the word, which both the New York Times and Urban Dictionary define as a “person who is tan on the outside” and “white on the inside.” Rubio is the son of Cuban exiles. [Audio available here.]

Deutsch employed the derogatory term while hitting politicians with no experience. He noted the success of such candidates and derided, “…You almost need that blank piece of paper. That’s the new model. Like, you know, this coconut Rubio down in Florida.”

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Brown on the outside, white on the inside. What is this? Sophomore year at Oberlin? Guess this bottom-feeder didn’t get Van Jones’ civility memo yet.

On a related note: Jon Stewart mocks CPAC as a “festival of whites.” And I’m sure the studio audience and demographic breakdowns for his nightly shows are a veritable rainbow of fruit flavors.

On another related note: Website Lists Clarence Thomas, Robert Mugabe & DC Sniper as “Embarrassing” Blacks.

***

Quick primer for those of you unfamiliar with the “coconut” insult:

If you are a conservative with Latino/Pacific Islander/Filipino heritage, you’re a coconut (brown on the outside, white on the inside).

If you are a conservative with Asian heritage, you’re a Twinkie or banana (yellow on the outside, white on the inside).

And if you are a conservative who happens to be black, you are an Oreo (black on the outside, white on the inside).

Okay, who is getting hungry?

***

Update: My great blogger friend and fellow coconut Val Prieto at Babalu (who I had a pleasure to meet in person last week in D.C. at a blogger bash) has an update on the story — Donny Deutsch is now playing dumb. Not that it’s such a great stretch…

Here’s the direct link to Deutsch’s Tweet. Sure, of all the words to come out of his mouth, “coconut” just happened to roll off the bitter tongue…

21st Century Breakdown

I had not heard the phrase “the fourth turning” until I heard the documentary producers use it on Hannity last night, and now I do. It is scary, but makes emminent sense. We know intuitively we are in the middle of something big, this explains what it is, why it is, and maybe gives us some clue as to what must be done....I think everyone feels it, like an undercurrent of electricity humming. I know I don’t know exactly what is happening, but SOMETHING is. As my cousin (who regrets her hysterical vote for Obama) expressed it, there is a “deep sense of foreboding.”

I feel it, and I see it on people in the grocery store. Well, nowhere have I been proven more wrong than Holland where the history of the last decade – from the 2002 assassination of Pim Fortuyn to the 2005 murder of Theo Van Gogh to the current controversy surrounding the trial (and political candidacy) of Geert Wilders – makes clear the we indeed live in a world upside down.

As a reminder, Wilders is the Dutch politician now on trial for “hate-speech” in the Netherlands. Among other things he has produced the film Fitna, accusing Islam of being a violent ideology, and called for the banning of the Koran in Holland in similar manner to the banning of Mein Kampf in that country.

A failure of GOP imagination

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 24, 2010 09:55 AM

I’ve already made clear: John McCain is the problem with the GOP. And he’s trying to install his mini-mes as congressional candidates across the country. Yesterday, Mitt Romney lined up with He That Ails the GOP:

Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts released a statement today, saying it would be “hard to imagine the United States Senate without John McCain, especially in the critical times we find ourselves in, with double-digit unemployment, a mountain of debt imperiling future generations and a global terrorist threat from jihadists bent on destroying our way of life.”

What we have here is a failure of GOP imagination.

Imagine a United States Senate without an illegal alien amnesty-peddling, bailout-caving, free speech-limiting, fairweather global warming cultist who has spent decades bashing the conservative wing of the Republican Party and then tries to pander to it whenever his seat is on the line.

It’s easy if you try.

Re-branding the government: Obama, TMP, and logo-mania

February 24, 2010 10:56 AM by Michelle Malkin

I’ve gotten tons of e-mails over the last several days regarding the new Obama-fied logo for the Missile Defense Agency (it was unveiled last fall).

If you go to the DOD/MDA’s website here, you’ll see both the new logo at the top and the old logo at the bottom.

Free Republic first noticed the similarity to the Obama campaign logo. Weasel Zippers, Political Wrinkles, JWF, and other blogs have picked up on it.

It’s not worth blowing a gasket over, but the re-branding of the government is a rather aggravating and noteworthy fact of life in the Age of Obama.

"Hmm…. Is that a variation of Crescent and Star, kind of like that “Crescent of Embrace” design for 9/11 Flight 93 Memorial?"

"Obama has more logos than legitimate politcal achievements."

"Just like the rest of Obama’s administrations: style over substance."

When we first saw the new design the Utopia Administration created for the Missile Defense Agency, we immediately thought “they are talking Obama’s personal emblem and branding government agencies with it now”.

This is a time-honored tradition of tyrants and egomaniacs.

"The one good thing about Miss Thang being elected is that the sleeping masses have been awakened. And they’ve had twenty cups of coffee. "

"I find this extremely disturbing coupled with the daily reports of CAIR activities, of pandering to Muslims in our school systems, churches etc. I believe in religous tolerance BUT not the DOMINATION of our nation by Muslims."

I feel a little better having read this.

I keep wondering if the reconciliation threat is genuine or kabuki for the we-need-a-win hyperpartisan superfans in the nutroots -- who view this as basically nothing but a sporting event in which their quarterback hero Barack Obama needs a comeback.

Update: At least 15 down, according to Stupak and Cantor.

154 Short term, ramming the bill through is bad for the Democrats. Long term it is good for them. Obama's goal is to create more dependents. People dependent on government handouts tend to vote Democrat. Obama's goal is to create structural change to ensure, long term, a majority left-wing voting block.

The same idea works for granting amnesty to illegals. Short term it hurts the Dems, but long term it guarantees more left-wing voters.

The hard left is not dumb. They want to use their big majorities they currently have to ram through as many structural changes as possible before the 2010 elections. Sure, the Republicans might take over for the next 4-6 years, maybe longer, but the long term structure will have been fundamentally altered in favor of the Left. The hard left care much more about the next several decades than the next several years.

Worst. Congress. Ever.

The Pelosi-Reid Swamp reached a grim milestone today with the lowest approval rating ever recorded for a Congress in Rasmussen history.
Rasmussen reported:

Voter unhappiness with Congress has reached the highest level ever recorded by Rasmussen Reports as 71% now say the legislature is doing a poor job.

That’s up ten points from the previous high of 61% reached a month ago.

Only 10% of voters say Congress is doing a good or excellent job.

Nearly half of Democratic voters (48%) now give Congress a poor rating, up 17 points since January. The vast majority of Republicans and voters not affiliated with either party also give Congress poor ratings.

Seventy percent (70%) of voters say Congress has not passed any legislation that would significantly improve life for Americans, up 10 points over the past month and the highest level of dissatisfaction measured in regular tracking in over three years. Only 15% say Congress has passed such legislation.

Forty percent (40%) of voters nationwide now say it is at least somewhat likely Congress will seriously address the most important issues facing the nation. That’s down from 59% last March. Only 9% say it is Very Likely Congress will address these issues.

More Of The Same, Only More Expensive

Flight 93 Memorial Design Should Spark More Outrage Than New Missile Defense Agency Logo

Earlier today, Drudge Report correctly pointed out similarities that exist between the new logo of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (below left) and the logo used by the presidential campaign of Barack Obama (below right). It's another design similarity, however, that deserves more attention and should spark more outrage among Americans.

The design of the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa. (below left), is almost identical in appearance to the Islamic crescent moon and star symbol (below right) -- yes, the same iconic symbol adorning the flags of no fewer than 11 Muslim countries around the world today.

Appeals court: We're listening to eligibility case (re: Kerchner v. Obama)

Judges grant permission for lengthy filing in case challenging Obama

An appeals court has indicated it is listening to arguments in a case that challenges Barack Obama's occupancy in the Oval Office with a ruling that gives special permission for an extra-long document to be filed in the case.

WND has reported on the case brought by attorney Mario Apuzzo in January 2009 on behalf of Charles F. Kerchner Jr., Lowell T. Patterson, Darrell James Lenormand and Donald H. Nelson Jr.

Named as defendants were Barack Hussein Obama II, the U.S., Congress, the Senate, House of Representatives, former Vice President Dick Cheney and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The case alleges Congress failed to follow the Constitution, which "provides that Congress must fully qualify the candidate 'elected' by the Electoral College Electors."

The complaint also asserts "when Obama was born his father was a British subject/citizen and Obama himself was the same." The case contends the framers of the U.S. Constitution, when they adopted the requirement that a president be a "natural born citizen," excluded dual citizens."

In the "Hmmm..." Dept.:

Here’s the deal:  something — SOMETHING — is definitely up in Hillaryland because too many people have been emailing, calling, and mobilizing in the last few days in “Fire Drill” mode, testing networks, and checking to make sure email lists are still valid for this to be just out of the blue.

It feels like someone from “upstairs” gave a little push.  It might have been NoLimits.org changing its social network system this last week, so people reconnected through old channels to make sure everyone was still in touch.  As we have repeatedly told you, Hillary’s Army never went anywhere, except to Winter Quarters. There are many Hillary supporters who went back to their old lives after the election and are not involved in politics anymore, the way we are.  Those, in many ways from our perspective, are smart people.

BUT, what makes the last several days interesting is the fact that THESE are the people who we have been hearing from, in spades.  ”Saw the Bat-Signal and am reporting in”, is the gist of it.  ”Is it time to kick ass or what?”.

Here’s what we think is going on:  coming from the grassroots, it looks like Hillary’s Army is mobilizing on its own to call back its general to the field, to take back the country from Dr. Utopia and end The Golden Age of Hope and Change.  What Clinton will decide to do is up to her, but it feels like her ground troops are starting to mount an effort to court her back into the political world, to leave the State Department, and to hit Dr. Utopia hard in the primaries in 2012.

The thought from many of us is that Dr. Utopia won’t even run, and will say he has Parkinson’s so he has a sympathetic medical reason for pulling an LBJ.

What we think is prompting this mobilization of Hillary’s Army is Evan Bayh’s retirement announcement and the thought that Bayh did that so he could run a primary challenge in 2012.  It feels to us that Hillary’s supporters don’t want Bayh to get the jump on Hillary 2012 before any of us have the chance to make it happen.

An excellent source for any insight onto what could be happening is The Big Pink, Hillaryis44.org. They were one of the first pro-Hillary sites out there, and are still one of the best.  We read them every day.  Keep an eye on what’s going on over there, always.  They are well-sourced, and they came on the scene two years before any of us here ever thought we’d be spending so much time on a computer.

If we figure out more of what’s going on, we’ll fill you in, but this feels like it’s a 100% grassroots effort to draft Clinton for 2012, perhaps sparked by someone upstairs, but most likely in response to the failure of this current presidency and the possible primary challenge Bayh might be mounting.

********

Something to think about, and we won’t say who told us this off the record today, but you’ve seen her on TV:

I think it comes down to two very possible scenarios:

One:  It’s already pre-arranged he won’t run for second term.  She backed off the fight for the nomination in 2008 when the agreement was made. (perhaps he cited his terminal disease, Parkinsons, etc)

Two: It depends on just how disastrous 2010 elections go – if bad enough- there will be a loud enough drum beat for her to be justified in challenging him and his abysmal fund-raising will only further exacerbate an overwhelming non-support for his re-election from the Democratic party.

********

The key to a lot of this is fundraising.  If we can mobilize a giant effort to get the wealthy and corporate interests in this country to stop giving to the DNC and Democrat candidates because they are too Liberal, then we can cut Utopia off at the knees and hasten his Parkinsons’ announcement and retirement to Hawaii.

Cut off the Left’s money sources, and we’ll cut off Utopia at the knees.

Also – this is a fantastic article about what a disgrace it is that the MSM is not reporting on Climategate. It’s a powerful article b/c it comes from a progressive website. Even though its author still believes global warming is real, he has the good sense to see there’s significant, dangerous bias causing the MSM to fail at their jobs (and he confesses Climategate has removed the urgency and hysteria behind fixing global warming). Given the source of this article, it’s a great one to show to libs and progressives who need an eye opening.

Because of all the pro-LGBTQ coverage Hot Air has been running lately, someone sent them a graphic for “the redesign of Hot Air”:

H/t Hot Air

In comments on that post, someone said the following:

“I thought this site already existed.  It’s called HillBuzz”.

What’s really funny, and prescient, is that we really like the layout of this fake “Gay Air” site.  We also wish one of us was a cartoonist, because we’d have a lot more art like this, and we love the purple.  All that’s missing is our big 70s yellow logo and crudely rendered bee, and a touch more personality, and it’s kind of a glimpse into what we want the site to look like when we finally get onto a dedicated server and off WordPress.

We’re so taking the “It’s called HillBuzz” as a compliment.

The fact readers of a conservative site like Hot Air even have a bunch of gay Hillary Dems in Boystown, Chicago on their radar enough to crack jokes about us tells us we’re getting through to someone.

And that’s a pretty cool thing.

Pucker up, buttercup.

Here’s a real head-scratcher: Charlie Crist, in full-on Gloria Swanson mode, has stolen the credit card records from the Florida GOP and has released them to the press, in some bizarre, poorly-considered effort to destroy Marco Rubio.

With what, exactly, is this very orange and disturbed man self-medicating?

The part we don’t understand is why the Florida GOP has not said enough is enough, and just gone public with everything that’s out there on Crist.

All his adventures at the Green Iguana in Tampa, of which the gay community in Florida has known all about, and talked openly about for years.

All about his appearances in public as “Charlotte, Belle of the South”, one of the ugliest drag queens just about anyone’s ever seen (worse than when Giuliani did drag for SNL or Halloween or whenever).

This damn fool has been spending way too much time with Tom Cruise and John Travolta, because if he thinks that woman he married is going to keep people from telling the truth about him, he’s got another thing coming if he wants to really play “scorched Earth”.

It could all be a terrible mistake, of course.

“Scorched Earth?  No, you ninny.  I said BURNT OMBRE.  Possibly Crimson Sunrise.  Honey, you just KNOW I’m a Fall, and I sure ’nuff loves my tan, so BURNT OMBRE is the shade I want that hunky new Mystic Tan salesman to start pumping into…my tanning booth.  BURNT OMBRE, not “Scorched Earth”.  If I’m ever to appear again as Miss Charlotte, I just have to keep looking my best.  My fans demand it!”.

What needs to happen is this:  the GOP in Florida needs to completely decimate Crist.  Open the file everyone knows you have on him.  Trot out all the photos that must exist of him in drag.  Bring forward his old buddies from the Green Iguana. Find out if he’s been using Rentboys while “married” to Carole Rome.

If Crist wants to take Rubio down with despicable, desperate attacks, someone needs to drag all the skeletons out of Crist’s closet…ballgowns and all.

What a horrible, horrible, awful man.

Florida GOP, it’s time to step up and put a stop to this if you want to keep that Senate seat.

The New York Times has finally dropped the long-awaited hit piece on NY Governor David Paterson.

They are claiming Paterson abused his powers as Governor, used the state police to harass a woman who claims one of his aides beat her, and that he called the woman on the telephone to menace her.

The NY Times, for all intents and purposes, might as well be edited by Rahm Emanuel.  It 100% does the White House’s bidding, and the White House vowed months ago to destroy Paterson.

How Corrupted Language Moved from Campus to the Real World

The Real Cost Of ObamaCare

Health Reform: The linchpin of ObamaCare 2.0 is that 31 million uninsured will be covered at little added cost. But in fact, White House estimates for low costs are based on little more than accounting tricks.

The president's plan "puts our budget and economy on a more stable path by reducing the deficit by $100 billion over the next 10 years — and about $1 trillion over the second decade — by cutting government overspending and reining in waste, fraud and abuse," the White House says on its Web site.

Sound too good to be true? It is.

None of the numbers can be believed. The plan is a result of blatantly dishonest accounting for the real costs of the program, while grossly overstating its benefits. Americans should know the actual 10-year cost is closer to $2 trillion over 10 years, not the $950 billion claimed, when all the actual costs are toted up.

How can there be such a wide gap? Mainly because the president's plan doesn't provide benefits until the second half of the first decade. So it pretends that it will "only" cost $950 billion. But once the program kicks in, the full 10-year cost of benefits will be included — at a real current cost of $2 trillion or more.

Or, as columnist Charles Krauthammer, himself a trained physician, told Fox News' Bill O'Reilly: "It's a trick. The way the Democrats got under (the spending limit imposed by Obama) was by making 98% of the expenditures, the benefits that you and I would get under the bill, occur in the second half of the decade."

Here’s a great piece by George Will, which talks briefly about an interesting phenomenon we’re observing these days:  Leftists going absolutely out of their minds crazy because the Constitution does not allow them to force their radical agenda upon a continental nation of private citizens who do not want socialism to rule over them.

The Left is screeching and writhing because it’s come as close as it will ever get to its goals of destroying the country and remaking it in the image of failed European states.

Will notes that presidents Reagan, Clinton, and Bush were able to accomplish so much more by working across the aisle than Dr. Utopia accomplishes by trying to force through his socialist agenda, while he yet enjoys the largest majority Democrats have had in decades.

Because of his poor performance and failed presidency, Democrats will lose that majority come November, and might not get it back for decades, so long as the public remembers what Leftists did in power when they took over the country in 2008.

But, as Will notes, the genius that created our Constitution scried deep into the future in great prescience, almost anticipating a day like today, when a madman sat in the White House and spineless, partisan loons held the majority in both chambers of Congress.

Thank you James Madison. Thank you George Will for thanking Madison.  Thank you voters, in advance, for booting as many bums out in 2010 as possible.

It’s clear when you read about the Founders generally and the Constitution, that this was founded as a conservative, republican nation. Limit the powers of the federal government, checks and balances to prevent guys like Utopia from ruining the country by fiat, etc.

My question is – can’t leftists see that? Are we the most powerful and richest country on earth (among other great things) because we have great Social Security benefits and great Dept of Education programs? No. It’s because of the freedoms we enjoy, which come from the founders and the Constitution.

And they seem to want to dismantle our country and model it after mediocre European nations.

Liberal Hypocrisy on Full Display [revolutionary communist Van Jones calls Bush 'crackhead']

There is no major difference between Van Jones and Obama, Rev Wright, Bill Ayers and many of the other people he spent his whole life around.

"Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal".

by Cornel West (Editor), Eddie S. Glaude Jr. (Editor)

SEAN HANNITY: But Reverend Jeremiah Wright is not backing down and has not for years and in his strong stance on the teaching of black liberation theology is nothing new. He had the same things to say last spring when he appeared on "Hannity & Colmes:"

WRIGHT: If you're not going to talk about theology in context, if you're not going to talk about liberation theology that came out of the '60s, systematized black liberation theology that started with Jim Cone in 1968 and the writings of Cone and the writings of Dwight Hopkins and the writings of womynist theologians and Asian theologians and Hispanic theologians, then you can't talk about the black value system.

HANNITY: But I'm a — reverend

WRIGHT: Do you know liberation theology, sir?

Obama's Church: Gospel of Hate
Kathy Shaidle, FrontPageMag.com
Monday, April 07, 2008

In March of 2007, FOX News host Sean Hannity had engaged Obama’s pastor in a heated interview about his Church’s teachings. For many viewers, the ensuing shouting match was their first exposure to "Black Liberation Theology"...

Like the pro-communist Liberation Theology that swept Central America in the 1980s and was repeatedly condemned by Pope John Paul II, Black Liberation Theology combines warmed-over 1960s vintage Marxism with carefully distorted biblical passages. However, in contrast to traditional Marxism, it emphasizes race rather than class. The Christian notion of "salvation" in the afterlife is superseded by "liberation" on earth, courtesy of the establishment of a socialist utopia.

Catholics for Marx [Liberation Theology]
By Fr. Robert Sirico
FrontPageMagazine.com | Thursday, June 03, 2004

In the days when the Superpowers were locked in a Cold War, Latin America seethed with revolution, and millions lived behind an iron curtain, a group of theologians concocted a novel idea within the history of Christianity. They proposed to combine the teachings of Jesus with the teachings of Marx as a way of justifying violent revolution to overthrow the economics of capitalism.

The Gospels were re-rendered not as doctrine impacting on the human soul but rather as windows into the historical dialectic of class struggle. These "liberation theologians" saw every biblical criticism of the rich as a mandate to expropriate the expropriating owners of capital, and every expression of compassion for the poor as a call for an uprising by the proletarian class of peasants and workers.

Michelle’s Hospital Turned Away The Poor

February 25th, 2010

This is something we have posted before, but it seems timely again in view of today’s ‘bipartisan healthcare summit.’

From the archives of the Chicago Sun-Times:

Martin Nesbitt, Valerie Jarrett, President Obama, Dr. Eric Whitaker

U. of C. shunning poor patients?

Obama’s wife, 3 aides tied to plan to free up space

August 23, 2008

...The other aide mentioned in this article, Mr. Whitaker is still one of Mr. Obama’s closest friend.

In fact, Mr. Whitaker is President Obama’s near constant companion. So he certainly still has his ear when it comes to healthcare reform.

Indeed, it was Mr. Whitaker and Valerie Jarrett who got Mrs. Obama her job in the first place. The hospital was then rewarded in turn by millions of dollars in earmarks from State Senator Barack Obama.

The only halfway logical and realistic solution for Detroit's endless problems: shrinking.

Here’s one of the more absurd things we’ve heard in a while:  Detroit Mayor Bing Emphasizes Need to Shrink City.

The Mayor says shrinking Detroit “won’t be easy”, but he’s seen things like this done before on television, so knows it must be possible.  ”If we don’t do it, you know this whole city is going to do down. I’m hopeful people will understand that,” Bing said, clutching a large bell jar he intends to place over Detroit, post-shrinking, “so no bad bugs can get inside and eat people”.

“We’re only going to have teeny little good bugs inside the city when we shrink it, though all the people will be teensy too, so these bugs will be the size of cows.  I heard about these bugs called aphids that sound nice, and we can use them like cows for milk and food once we are tiny and the city is shrunk.  That will be nice.  Someone told me we should just shrink real cows if we are shrinking everything else, but I don’t know if we have the technology for that, yet.  I’ll get back to you on that one.”

Community activist Hilda Startizzle is opposed to Mayor Bing’s plan to shrink Detroit, saying she is “adamantly opposed” to what she calls “the damn stupidest thing I have heard anyone say since they were chanting Hope! and Change! two years ago like zombified fools!”.

Startizzle insists “there’s no such thing as a shrinking ray” and that Mayor Bing “has done lost his mind”.

The Mayor’s staff recently conducted a months-long study that determined Detroit is “a 139-square mile city” that is “terrible”.  According to that study, shrinking Detroit would turn it into a roughly 36-square inch city, enclosed in glass, that would be “1/3 less terrible than it is now”.  Even if “bad bugs” get in and “eat people”.

Mayor Bing said he was inspired by the initiatives of the Obama Administration in planning to shrink the city, saying “Detroit is really venturing into a new frontier, and it’s all being driven by Hope and Change.  The president is a Lightbringer sent from the stars who has brought us all the new technology we need to lower the oceans, fix people’s broken souls, and become the change we had been waiting for when we didn’t know we were waiting for anything.  So, I figure he could invent a shrinking ray too, in his spare time, because then Detroit could be moved to the Smithsonian or someplace and everyone would live happily ever after just like those people Superman takes care of.  Better yet, Detroit can go on a shelf in the Oval Office and President Obama can take care of all of us, can feed us and clothe us and love us.  We’re all Obama voters in Detroit.  He said he would solve all our problems. What better way to do that than to keep us all as his pets and he can watch over us like the god we in Detroit believe him to be.  Hope! Change! Shrink us, oh mighty Lightrbinger!”.

Madness.

24 What you think doesn't count, Ace. Your intelligence disqualifies you from seeing the Truth:

Hey, Obama's a historic president who doesn't look like the other guys on our (now worthless) paper money!

He wants rainbows & unicorns for all!

He's facing down eeeeeevil Big Business!

McCain and Palin talked sense. That doesn't work when you're facing Mr Affirmative Action. He gets the win for showing up.

If we had anyone but the Chicago Jesus in the White House, and that individual pulled the shit the Traitor-in-Chief is pulling, he'd be too busy defending himself in impeachment hearings to pull this televised "health care" crap. Or he'd already be out of office and under indictment.

So keep being logical, Ace. Puts you in a small minority along with the rest of the morons.

P.S. When are the wimps over at HA going to call Obama out -- almost said "call a spade a spade" -- and start blasting Obama for the treasonous totalitarian scum he is?

Rave reviews for Republicans At The Health Care Sunnit

The Main Event: Ryan v. Obama (Ouch!)

Rep. Paul Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, just launched a full-bore assault on the faulty assumptions behind the claim that the Obama health care plan will reduce the deficit. Obama didn't even bother questioning Ryan's presentation. He changed the subject to Medicare Advantage. The expression on the president's face as Ryan made his case was absolutely priceless. Simply put, he looked like someone who realizes he's met his match.

We hope to have video soon.

Blowhard-a-thon at Blair House: Health care summit open thread; Update: Alexander calls out Dems on reconciliation; Obama to McCain: “We’re not campaigning anymore;” Obama’s thin skin is showing; Slaughter bemoans dead lady’s dentures; Boehner: “Dangerous experiment”

Scroll down for liveblogging…

Six entire hours of President Obama pretending to listen to the Republicans talk about the health care reform alternatives his press shop denied existed…even as they linked to those proposals on their own website. Whatevs. Here’s the video embed in case you have an urgent need to watch Oba-kabuki during your busy work day:

Waiting in the wings: Plan B.

This isn’t “transparency.” It’s political expediency.

Statement this morning from GOP House leader John Boehner:

For his part, President Obama comes to the table with the same massive government takeover of health care that the American people have already rejected. In effect, the president’s proposal actually takes the 2,733-page bill that the Senate passed on Christmas Eve and manages to make it worse. Even more Medicare cuts. Even more tax hikes. Plenty of special-interest deals still in place. A trillion-dollar price tag.

This latest Democrats-only backroom deal snuffed out any chance that this summit could serve as the starting point for a bipartisan consensus. Democrats are instead hoping that this media event can be the gateway to a final push that involves circumventing the will of the people and jamming a bill through using parliamentary tricks.

This is the same arrogance and overreaching that the American people are so fed up with. It’s why Massachusetts happened. It’s why Americans waited for hours in the August heat to get into town hall meetings and make sure their voices were heard.

Indeed, we’ve been here before. Shortly after Labor Day, the president gave an address to Congress designed to resuscitate his proposed government takeover of health care. That speech was followed by an all-out media blitz. It was described as a “last-ditch effort,” “an opportunity to take back the initiative.” Nearly six months later, still no health care bill has been signed into law, tens of thousands more have lost their jobs and unemployment is still near 10 percent.

All this uncertainty is hurting small businesses, the engine of job creation in our country, while Americans are rightly asking: “Where are the jobs?”

The president’s health care media blitz was based on the notion that the more the American people learn about his plan, the more they would come to like it. Now that just the opposite has occurred, the president has chosen to limit participation in the Thursday summit to administration officials and congressional leaders. America’s governors and state legislatures have been excluded. Their perspective from the front lines about the damage this massive government takeover of health care would do to cash-strapped states is apparently not welcome. That’s greatly disappointing, considering that measures have been introduced in at least 36 state legislatures opting out of a federal takeover of health care.

Also excluded from today’s summit is Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., co-author of a House-passed amendment barring federal funding of abortion. The Stupak-Pitts amendment — which reflects the will of the American people on the issue of federal funding of abortion — is supported by a bipartisan majority in the House, but was excluded from the president’s proposal. Pro-life Democrats in the House have already pledged to vote against this provision. Health care reform should be an opportunity to protect human life — not end it. This fundamental issue isn’t even listed as a topic for discussion at the summit.

The president can hold all the summits he wants, but the toothpaste is out of the tube: The American people don’t want this massive government takeover of health care. No summit or speech or sales pitch can fix a fundamentally flawed 2,000-plus-page health care bill that spends money we don’t have and kills the jobs we need to get our economy moving again.

Let’s listen to the American people and let’s start over.

***

Will Republicans raise the issue of what IBD calls the “raw hypocrisy of reconciliation?”

Nothing so far in the yearlong debate on health reform has exposed the Democrats’ rank hypocrisy as much as the viewing of these past statements condemning as an unconstitutional power grab what they now propose to do.

***

10:15am Eastern. In an opening statement/lecture, Obama drags his daughters into the health care reform debate. Rehashes questionable menigitis story. See background on that here: Leave Obama’s kids alone…except when POTUS & FLOTUS need them for Obamacare.

10:22am Eastern. Insert laugh track. Obama: “I hope this will not just be theater.” And if it is, Obama goes on, “I hope it’s an opportunity to clarify our positions.”

Sen. Lamar! Alexander is making the opening statement for the GOP. He points out that he is a former governor and hopes to represent views of other governors who were excluded from summit. Roasts backroom deals. Uses car show analogy. Demcare plans are models we can’t afford.

10:34am Eastern. Alexander calls out Obama/Dems on reconciliation. Asks O to renounce tactics, quotes Obama opposition to reconciliation tactics in prior Senate debates. “Renounce jamming it through.” Start over, work together, reduce health care costs. Make that the goal for now. “It means going step by step together to re-earn the trust of the American people.”

Alexander: “If we don’t take reconciliation off the table, the rest of the meeting meaningless and the only thing bipartisan will be opposition to the bill.”

***

Alexander finishes. Nancy Pelosi up next. Brags about bipartisan vote for empty gesture measure lifting antitrust exemption for health insurers. Several minutes of emoting and stammering conclude with multiple invocations of Teddy Kennedy and the left-wing mantra: “Health care is a right, not a privilege.”

Next up: Harry Reid’s Save My Backside speech.

Reid: “No one’s talking about reconciliation!” But, anyway, it’s been done before. Blah, blah, blah. Reid says Demcare bill has had “significant input from Republicans.”

Invokes a constituent named “Jesus” many times. “Jesus.” “Jesus.”

11:00am Eastern. Obama makes claims about lowering premiums in his Demcare bill. Alexander calls him out. Obama gets snippy.

11:34am Eastern. GOP Rep. Dave Camp provides cost reality checks – citing CMMS, PriceWaterhouseCooper, and illuminating restrictions on HSA/MSAs. Points out limits on out-of-pocket spending and coverage mandates that bend the cost curve upward. Obama cuts him off.

11:47am Eastern. McConnell notes that Dems have had 52 minutes. GOP has had 24. Obama snips: “There was an imbalance in the opening statements because I am the president.” In other words: I WON.

Obama remedies the partisan time imbalance by…launching into another long-winded insurance anecdote. HE WON.

And now…over to Charles Schumer!

12:10pm Eastern From the GOP Senate Conference:

Setting the Record Straight: President Obama Cut GOP Some Slack?

At the start of the White House summit on health care, President Obama suggested that he cut Republicans some slack and allowed Senator Alexander to give longer opening remarks. Democratic leadership and President Obama’s opening remarks totaled more than 30 minutes. Senator Alexander clocked in at 13 minutes and 10 seconds.

President Obama to Senator Alexander: “Lamar, both I and Lamar went a little bit over our original allocated time. I — not wanting to be a hypocrite — wanted to give you some slack.”

DEMOCRATS’ OPENING REMARKS REPUBLICAN OPENING REMARKS

President Obama 14 mins, 36 seconds Senator Alexander 13 mins, 10 seconds
Speaker Pelosi 7 mins, 57 seconds
Leader Reid 8 mins, 13 seconds
30 mins, 46 seconds

12:32pm Eastern. McCain talks about backroom deals. Irritable Obama snaps: “We’re not campaigning anymore.” (McCain: “I’m reminded of that every day.”) O flips papers. Jeers at GOP “talking points.” Gives the ball to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

12:47pm Eastern. Cantor has the massive Senate bill printout in front of him. Obama squirms and frowns. Calls it a “prop” and blames printouts for preventing “dialogue.”

1:00pm Eastern. Last speaker before the break: Democrat Rep. Louise Slaughter, who complains about women and minorities being excluded from clinical trials years ago and tells a sob story about a woman who was “forced” to wear her dead sister’s dentures. Or something.

Obama extols the “terrific conversation” so far.

Pray for the Republic, people.

2:08pm Eastern. MSNBC has now cut away from Act II of Oba-Kabuki and is broadcasting Olympic women’s hockey instead.

‘She wore her dead sister’s teeth.”

This wins the sappy lib sob story of the day, hands down.
Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) claims a constituent wore her dead sister’s teeth. Obamacare will change all of that.

Via the B-Cast:
“You will not believe this and I know you won’t, but it’s true. Her sister died. This poor woman had no dentures. She wore her dead sister’s teeth, which of course were uncomfortable and did not fit.”

Will Obamacare buy me glasses and contacts? Will Obamacare buy me a gold tooth in the front of my mouth with a little heart on it?

We like to think we started the ball rolling on this meme, with the excellent work by Seapea depicting Dr. Utopia as we see him, “The Queen of Farts”,  clutching his pork-a-corn, happily strolling through the mess s/he’s made of our country:

The Queen of Hearts in her Golden Age of Hope and Change

But, it looks like other cartoonists are picking up on the Alice motif as the new Tim Burton movie gets closer to release.  For some reason, they’re drawing Dr. Utopia as the Mad Hatter, with Harry Reid as the White Rabbit (RAAACIST!) and Nancy Pelosi as the Queen of Hearts.  Joe Biden is the Doormouse (when we see him as a giant, ice-cream devouring, caterpillar). Pelosi and Reid are the Tweedles, clearly, not the WR and QoH.  And with giant mushrooms looking so phallic in a cartoon like this, we can only imagine Rahm Emanuel rolling around on the ground salivating, as a Wonderland ballerina wishing he was back at Studio 54, where Truman Capote once took him over the moon to his own very personal “Wonderland”.

I think reconciliation is an empty threat. Oh I think they are nuts enough to do it. But the votes aren’t there. I’ve been hearing confident bluster from the Dem leadership for a year now on health care. They are still blustering. If they had the votes, this health care summit stunt never would have happened.

Oh yeah, he did himself a huge disservice with this televised health care debacle from yesterday. He proved, beyond all doubt, that he is arrogant and supercilious and not the slightest bit interested in bipartisan reasoning together or what the American people actually WANT – he just wants to get his way because that’s what his “masters” are pushing him to do! Anyone who thinks this pinhead orchestrated his rise to the presidency is naive. People like George Soros are pulling his strings and he is their willing and complicit dupe! That’s why he believes he is made of teflon. He’s never had to struggle for anything he has “achieved”!

February 26, 2010 at 1:24 am

I think the Health Crime Summit proved to America that we have the most arrogant president in history right now. He just could not keep himself from reminding people that he won. He’s the president. To see the looks on his face when people said things he didn’t like was like watching a little kid making faces at his parents.

Sarah Palin throws more ninja stars at the Administration...from Facebook

Sarah Palin’s hitting the Five Main Lies of the Rationing Summit yesterday, in typical Sarah Palin ninja-throwing-star-style.

Love. This. Woman.

Word is she’s got a whole warehouse full of those things, ready to dispatch via Facebook.  Like this:

An unlimited supply of truth-telling and ridicule for those who deserve it, kept somewhere near Wasilla, Alaska.

Read what the Governor has to say and then chime on on what you think about the Administration’s Five Lies.

February 26, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Palin is becoming the foil to Obama whether the GOP elites like it or not. She is the only one taking it to Obama on a daily basis, and showing leadership skills. Palin and Cheney were the only ones criticizing Obama in the summer. The other ones are no where to be seen or heard. Is this the type of leadership we want in 2012? Someone afraid to stand up to the Left and MSM?

Obama’s 10 Biggest Health Care Mistakes: “The Daily Beast breaks down the strategic missteps that drained Obama’s political capital—and left him empty-handed on his top domestic priority.”

What Was Obama Thinking? “Was he trying to make the Republicans look bad—retrograde ogres who would leave uninsured babies to die in their cribs? If so, he didn’t succeed at all. On the contrary, they came out of it looking rather alert and grown-up. . . . The marathon TV teach-in—in which Obama was more schoolmarm than president—should be regarded by Democrats as a great disappointment. They made no clear gain, and won no clear argument. . . . What was so striking about the summit was the preparedness of the Republicans. All of them had done their homework: Lamar Alexander, Tom Coburn, John Kyl, John McCain, Dave Camp, John Barrosso, and Paul Ryan. The Democrats, by contrast, suffered from an acute case of “anecdotitis” (is it a preexisting condition?)”

Remember that PATRIOT Act thingy? You didn’t think it would be going away just because the Democrats campaigned against it every day in 2008, did you?

Not only did I not think it would be going away, I thought the people who were going on about the fierce moral urgency of change were either tools or rubes. And I was right! Plus, House leaders strip ban on degrading interrogation. So much for the fierce moral urgency of change. . .

IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY, so the Tea Party movement ought to be flattered by the me-too lefty “Coffee Party.”

This is actually the second imitation; the first was an epic fail. Maybe this one will do better, but so far they’ve got a message problem: “I don’t really understand what they’re about other than ‘we don’t like the Tea Party’ and ‘we’re for a better process.’”

However, if it does take off, it’ll just prove my point that we’re undergoing a Third Great Awakening, one that’s political, rather than religious in nature.

UPDATE: “Latte Liberals.”

ANOTHER UPDATE: Reader Steve Wylie writes: “Great job by the Post: they can finally write (somewhat) objectively about a movement that’s been around for a year and attracted hundreds of thousands to its ranks, but only by writing about another movement that’s been around for about a month and has not quite ten thousand ‘fans’ on Facebook.”

THE ST. LOUIS TEA PARTY celebrates its one-year anniversary tomorrow.

Dear Mistur Pezident, I am 2 years old living in Mattatusitts. My mommy and daddy have 5 jobs and still cannot pay the bills. Please tell Uncle Harry Reid to use reconsiliashon and bring us health care refowm now!

9 More rubbish... I have yet to hear a substantive (or any) critique of what Tea Partiers are for and against. Is there a good argument to be made for spending ourselves into oblivion?

139 Another way to look at it would be that the folks who are actually paying the bills are tired of their money being wasted, and their children's and grandchildren's ( futures ) being squandered to buy the votes of those who are willing to let us pay for them.

SHOCKER: CNN poll: Majority of Americans … agree with founders. “This shouldn’t be a surprise; it should be basic civics. . . . A massive federal government and the crushing debt it produces is exactly what the founders wanted to avoid. Thankfully, 56% of Americans have awoken to the danger of Leviathan. It’s hard to figure out what it will take to get the other 44% to comprehend it, short of total collapse.”

UPDATE: Reader Joe Johnson writes:

Prof. Reynolds, please recall that some 40% or so of American households now pay zero federal/state taxes, so they really haven’t much incentive to agree with the founders about the debt crisis and the coming tax increases to pay interest on the debt.

I think you mean income tax. Well, about 33% disagreed with the founders at the time of the Revolution, so we haven’t fallen all that far.

Paul Ryan Schools Barack Hussein Obama

Rep Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is rapidly becoming my favorite Republican. He has offered a Blueprint called Move America Forward. The plan calls for a balanced budget and making America competitive again. Yesterday at the Health care summit, he really took Obama apart. While Obama appealed on fairness and emotion, Paul emphasized facts. He took apart Obama’s plan and made the case that the spending was not sustainable.

Stuck On Stupid:

Rick at Brutally Honest wonders if some member of the press might ask Obama to define what he means by socialism, given Obama’s statement yesterday:

“Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, I am an ardent believer in the free market,” Obama said in prepared remarks.
. . . “Getting this balance right has less to do with big government or small government than it does smart government. It’s not about being anti-business or pro-government; it’s about being pro-growth and pro-jobs,” he said.

Obama seems not to understand that what he calls “smart government” (like his “smart diplomacy”) has inspired most of the country to wonder if his administration knows what the word “smart” means. But I am more struck with this part of the report:

“Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, I am an ardent believer in the free market,” Obama said in prepared remarks.

Well, we all know that in “prepared remarks” Obama will say just about anything. He said he had no interest in taking over GM, just before he took them over. Anytime he says he is not interested in doing something, that’s usually about the time he does it. In his world words mean what he says he means.

Which, perhaps, is why much of the country is having a hard time believing any of the words that come out of his mouth.

They are, after all, just words. Since words have -ironically, considering how he loves them- stopped working for this president, perhaps it is time for Obama to take an action; to do something just dramatic enough to make people sit up and listen, and actually, truly, feel hopeful.

Obama needs to he opens up his absurd, pre-determined-outcome of a “healthcare summit” today by holding up the 2000 page health care bill that no one has read, and then inserting it into a shredder.

Then he can stand up, and announce: “now, we start anew.”

THAT would be “smart”. THAT would be leadership! THAT would be a bit of American Genius. THAT would be brilliant political theater. THAT would be unifying and post-partisan.

THAT would give him back his presidency.

I won’t hold my breath.

The key to restoring trust has nothing to do with communication. Steve McIntyre doesn’t inspire trust because he is a good communicator. He inspires trust because he follows the age-old practices of science — transparency and openness and freewheeling scientific discussion and honest reporting of results.

And until mainstream climate science follows his lead, I’ll let you in on a very dark, ugly secret — I don’t want trust in climate science to be restored. I don’t want you learning better ways to propagandize for shoddy science. I don’t want you to figure out how to inspire trust by camouflaging your unethical practices in new and innovative ways. I don’t want scientists learning to use clever words and communication tricks to get people to think that the wound is healed until it actually is healed. Rebuttals To Ryan? We're Still Waiting

Rep. Paul Ryan's pointed questions went conspicuously unanswered at the big health care summit. AP View Enlarged Image

Politics: Many viewers were wowed by the president's performance at the health care summit, his command of facts and ability to rebut every point the Republicans made. We must have been watching another channel.

'Obama dominates the room at health care summit" was the headline on a Reuters dispatch that found the president "always in command not only of the room but also the most intricate policy details, as he personally rebutted every point he disagreed with."

In a Washington Post column titled "Professor Obama schools lawmakers on health care reform," Dana Milbank marveled at how the president "controlled the microphone and the clock, (using) both skillfully to limit the Republicans' time, to rebut their arguments and to always have the last word."

Milbank went on to tell how Sen. John McCain got his "knuckles rapped" by the learned professor, how Sen. Mitch McConnell was made to "look small in his chair" and how various other Republican low-achievers felt the sting of Obama's "big rhetorical paddle."

But neither Reuters nor Milbank — nor many others, it seems — noticed Obama's conspicuous non-rebuttal to Rep. Paul Ryan.

It was the Wisconsin congressman who made the most pointed remarks about Obama's reform proposal. For example:

Obama Revives Senate's Dead Health Reform

Our Own Greek Tragedy

While President Obama was making his latest pitch for a brand new, even more unsustainable entitlement at the health care "summit," thousands of Greeks took to the streets to riot. An enterprising cable network might have shown the two scenes on a continuous split screen - because they're part of the same story. It's just that Greece is a little further along in the plot: They're at the point where the canoe is about to plunge over the falls. America is further upstream and can still pull for shore, but has decided instead that what it needs to do is catch up with the Greek canoe. Chapter One (the introduction of unsustainable entitlements) leads eventually to Chapter 20 (total societal collapse): The Greeks are at Chapter 17 or 18.

What's happening in the developed world today isn't so very hard to understand: The 20th century Bismarckian welfare state has run out of people to stick it to. In America, the feckless insatiable boobs in Washington, Sacramento, Albany and elsewhere are screwing over our kids and grandkids. In Europe, they've reached the next stage in social democratic evolution: There are no kids or grandkids to screw over. The United States has a fertility rate of around 2.1, or just over two kids per couple. Greece has a fertility rate of about 1.3: 10 grandparents have six kids have four grandkids - i.e., the family tree is upside down. Demographers call 1.3 "lowest-low" fertility - the point from which no society has ever recovered. And compared to Spain and Italy, Greece has the least worst fertility rate in Mediterranean Europe.

Brits' Dirty Laundry

Democrats say that what they have planned for U.S. health care is not a copy of the British system. But a nationalized health care system, no matter how it's tailored, will collapse like other socialist programs. Government-run health care may at times look like it works, but it is unsustainable — and deadly.

Consider the British hospital trust that was the focus of a recently completed independent inquiry. According to U.K. media reports, the review found that at least 400 and as many as 1,200 patients died from 2005 to 2008 because of poor care by Mid Staffordshire National Health Service Foundation Trust, which operates two hospitals.

The final 455-page report did not include those figures (they apparently were used in a draft of the document). But a consultant involved in the inquiry admits that even if no specific figure can be assigned to the number of needless deaths, the fact that such deaths have occurred indicates a serious problem.

The report is filled with examples that should be the shame of the British health system. It documents patient deaths due to apparent cases of neglect and misdiagnoses, and says managers "stopped providing safe care because they were preoccupied with government targets and cutting costs." There are records of patients developing infections, going hungry and left sitting on toilets.

Stop The Presses! CNN Reported What?!

Hell must have frozen over because CNN, known for unwielding support of Barack Obama and leftist plans to socialize America, deviated this week from the mainstream media norm. On CNN’s The Situation Room, Wolf Blitzer and Lisa Sylvester examined the “lavish” pension-plan and retirement-packages government officials continue to receive despite the economic crisis. Such unusual reporting by progressive media did not go unnoticed. Picked up by the Wall Street Journal, Anthony Kang reports on the “Broken Government” segment noting its opening,

“Lawmakers on Capitol Hill get automatic pay-raises and they never have to worry about their retirement, but that’s not the case for many middle-class Americans.”

Not content to offer a lightweight episode, Blitzer and Sylvester interviewed Pete Sepp, the National Taxpayers Union’s vice president for policy and communications, who offers this tantalizing tidbit of information,

Speaking of Democrat radicals, everyone please read this post about the Leftists and their religion of big government. The current Democrat party does not CARE about losing the House and Senate if the cost is passing socialized medicine b/c its all about control and more gov’t power.

People, we are not dealing with sane and rational people. I hate to sound alarmist about this, but we have to further educate ourselves to what we are really dealing with. The fact that Obama and co. refuse to drop the healthcare issue, just proves the point of the authors.

The Political Bridge is Washed Out, But Democrats are Stoking the Locomotive as to Abyss

Congress' approval is down to 10%. President Obama's approval is down to 43% of voters, Republicans are ahead 9 points in a generic congressional ballot and voters are overwhelmingly rejecting Obamacare. President Obama and Democrats don't care. They are signaling they are willing to go over the abyss to socialize health care and takeover one sixth of the US economy, even if they pay a heavy price at the polls.

I've got news for all of you.  Only the most entrenched County Club Republican fossils have not  had the COME TO JESUS MOMENT.

John McCain is either extinct in November or 6 years from now.  A new day is dawning.  Let's call it the PAUL RYAN era.  Young, very young with a bright Conservative future.  Sarah Palin is young too.  The Republican party will either toe the Conservative line or be purged. And by Conservative I mean socially and fiscally.  The LIBTARDS cannot paint Republicans as radicals after THURSDAY...
