You're right. It is wrong for the Federal Government to REQUIRE community service from citizens at all, unless it is associated with the penal system.
And yes, I am also against a military draft, just in case that comes up.
I've done volunteer work and I enjoy it. But I will not be TOLD by the government to do so.
But I agree with you on the draft. I've been in almost 22 years...and being in charge of a unit...I can tell you there is a BIG difference b/w people who WANT to be there and people who don't. The voluntary service we have now is just fine. If we added a bunch of people who don't want to be here (especially those who can be founf in today's society)...it would be a real drag.
To those who were talking about school credits required for graduation being connected to community service...I really don't have an issue with that. 1) That is the STATE doing it. 2) It's not MANDATED that you have a high school diploma...you could do the extra work and home school or get a GED. If a STATE decides they want you to do something in return for THEIR diploma...then that's the price. Since one's not MANDATORY (the diploma)...then technically....neither is the other (the service)...its a choice you make. And if I REALLY don't want to make that choice...I could move to another state or disenroll...or get a high school education via some other means.
The problem with this is it is FEDERALLY MANDATED SERVICE FOR ALL...with NOTHING promised in return. And as another poster said...you can bet your bottom dollar that the kids who will be complying will be the suburban and rural kids...not the inner city kids.
I'm for a draft of all pansy-pants RINOs. 4 to 6 months of Army boot camp would toughen 'em up good. Conservatives would be exempt.
