"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."
The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nations challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.
I can’t believe people still believe there are “underserved schools.”
The city school system in my area spends $15,000 per student, nearly the highest in the nation, but still can only graduate half of its kids. This city district is undergoing a Fed/State funded $1 billion capital improvement project, but still has problems with kids bringing guns to schools.
They are NOT underserved. If anything, they are over-served.
Paraphrasing the Dixie Chicks, FUBO!
Arbeit macht frei!
Oh that is going to go over big with kids who are involved in sports programs after school.
They will probably hold up your diploma and for those over 55, your SS check when you qualify
Nazi Brown Shirts, it’s coming
My thoughts exactly.
One more way to increase the high-school drop-out rate and discourage even more kids from going to college. Any requirements for the slackers who choose to avoid school?
It’s for whoever “they” want. The Fascists have taken over the country.
“I’m so glad we’re homeschooling our kid!”
Obama may require proof of “community service” in high school as a condition of your children getting any Federal financial aid in college.
A happy ZEROBama Voter enjoys!!
Screw him.
People who volunteer already do so based on personal convictions and values.
If you don’t serve, do you get prison time or will he deny you education? I’d like to see a lawsuit on this.
In fact, I’d like to see lawsuits for everything he proposes.
As a working adult who was considering going back to college to finish my degree, this is supreme bullshit. It’s not easy working full-time and carrying a decent class load, but now this fascist wants to tell me that its mandatory that on top of that I work for “the common good” for free. F-— that noise.
Did you note that the volunteers/conscripts will also be
working to promote health? Perhaps fat monitors and have
monthly weigh-in for people who are obviously not taking
care of themselves and abusing health services. Same for
all the smokers that might be left. Have you reported to
the gym for fitness training? Who knows where it will end.
LOL, I was thinking the same thing, since my kid’s in grad school. He did have to do community service in high school to qualify for his scholarship for his undergrad degree (I think he had to have 75 hours of community service...but that was spread out over three years.)
Here’s an interesting thought...what’s he going to do if you don’t do the service...throw them in jail? If it’s a public U, I guess they could deny them a degree, or diploma, but what about a private college?
My kid’s a grad assistant and undergrads don’t even show up for class when they have a test...I’m sure they’re going to show up for volunteer work. /sarc
I couldn't have said it better myself.
I got your "compusory service" RIGHT HERE!
