SACRAMENTO, Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday proposed $4.4 billion in new taxes and a similar amount in spending cuts to deal with California's worsening fiscal crisis, saying, "We must stop the bleeding."
Much of the new revenue would come from a 1.5-percentage-point increase in the sales tax; the Republican governor described the hike as temporary but did not say how long it would last.
"We have a dramatic situation here and it takes dramatic solutions ... and immediate action," Schwarzenegger said as he called the Legislature back into session to deal with the budget shortfall.
The governor said $4.5 billion in cuts will be necessary across all state programs, including education, social services, health care and prisons.

New taxes. Worked well in Michigan so why not.

It’s CLEAR that California voters won’t allow cuts in state programs, so Arnold is being left with utterly no choice.
Whine all ya want, but the voters of California are driving thier own state in to bankruptcy.

Har!
California Whine is the best, I hear.
send ya a bottle. ;-)
Let's hope this keeps CA from having to get a bailout.
Yeah, aren't they all?
Get used to this headline, Americans.
Coming to a city/town near you!
I hope you aren’t too attached to your paychecks.
Me? I’m pulling back the throttle. I need to find ways to quickly get under the 0bamunists income radar.
I’d rather give every penny to my accountant than to the 0bamunists.
Socialism doesn’t just mean higher taxes, and a perpetual big government rectal exam. It also means longer vacations, fewer days worked, longer breaks, fewer employees, fewer customers, weakened competitors, slower technological advances and improvements, siesta’s, etc.
We don’t have to be totally negative about this.
Life in Italy is not all that bad, is it? Just bring that lifestyle here and you’ll be just fine.
To expect everything to come from tax cuts, especially in the midst of a recession/depression is to be utopian in the extreme.
If we don't pay our expenses now then it will only be passed on to our grandchildren.

It’s not the voters that won’t allow the cuts, its the unConstitutional government employee unions that won’t allow the cuts.
If you want to stop the bleeding there AHHNOLD, why don’t you arrest the damned illegals filling up your emergency rooms and welfare rolls. Of course, Maria and the rest of the Kennedys might not like it and then where would you be. Nobody wants to watch 55 year old action heroes. And conservatives wonder what’s wrong with the republican party!
My wife and I are talking about Poland.
He sounds like a broken record.
If he’d put the screws to the Dems with a veto pen, then he’d make progress of less GOVENMENT SPENDING.
Wake me up when he does this.
Till then, he’ll just TAX you MORE to “stop the bleeding”.
It makes no sense at all.
Way to go Arnie!
Let’s hope this keeps CA from having to get a bailout.

It’s all up to the democrats at this point. The line could be pretty long for bail-outs.
Ironic that the same party that is part and parcel of what has made such a mess of things as is, nows runs the train from engine to caboose..
Go figure that they keep voted back in, no matter how much more the state goes in debt... we won’t talk unfunded liabilities and looted coffers and the need for serious reform on ‘entitlement’ programs.
Yeah, just like income tax.
They're always “temporary”. It's just that “temporary” becomes permanent.
Sorry Arnold, you had your chance.
