I'm confused too. This from the story:

Senior campaign officials blame Schuenemann specifically for stories about the way Wallace and chief campaign strategist Steve Schmidt mishandled Palin's rollout — stories that the campaign says threw them off message in the critical final weeks of the campaign.

What does this mean?

There were stories about Palin being reigned in and not allowed to talk as she wanted to. I’m assuming this was part of that leak.

The leak concerning Palin’s apparent “stupidity” were only released last night by Carl Cameron. These weren’t known leaks until one day ago, and weren’t for being “pro-Palin” in nature, right?

McCain hasn’t fired these people or disavowed their comments, whoever they are. Carl called them, “unnamed McCain sources.”

Well it’s true.
They were going to continue to leak stories about her all important wardrobe and continue to claim she was going ‘rogue’.
So if he was defending her and leaking stories about the way they mishandled her I guess he did throw them off message.
