End the open primaries and stop letting the Traditional Media dictate our election strategy. They did this by bashing any of the true conservatives and, thus, steering the choice to a candidate that they liked...and who could ultimately be defeated by their boy. LOL, I'm sure the MSM would have properly respected Gov Romney's religious beliefs and not have made an issue of them in their coverage.

That's my thoughts exactly. Also, while the media was busy selecting McCain for nomination, conservatives were being manipulated by Huckabee and purists who trashed Romney, the most likely to succeed.

I wonder how a Romney/Palin ticket would've faired...

As anathema as a real conservative was to McCain, Romney would have been even less likely to pick someone that contrasted his history as she would have done. Even if he did get past this and picked her, the Palin lipstick would have helped him less and he would have faced a worse result. The one group that seems to have shown up for McCain (and this due to Palin) was the Religious Right that would not have supported Romney.
