Radio host Rush Limbaugh, the loudest conservative voice in American politics , today blasted John McCain's presidential campaign as weak and said Barack Obama's election as president is an opportunity to purge the Republican Party of candidates who abandon conservative principles.
"McCain's whole campaign was a concession speech," said Limbaugh in his post-election analysis. "We've now demonstrated to everyone how to lose."
Limbaugh dismissed any notion that victories by Democrats in the White House and Congress meant a repudiation of right-leaning principles.
Limbaugh explained conservatism was not on the ballot.
"We haven't been on the ballot since 1994," he said, noting that if Republicans wanted to win elections, they should not put so-called "moderates" on the ballot.
"The conservative movement does not need to be rebuilt," he said. "We had some people abandon the conservative movement, and they need to be abandoned."
The broadcaster called last night's results "an opportunity for cleansing ... like we haven't seen in a long time."

i’ll second your comment
When all these people start getting let go at their jobs because their employers can’t pay the taxes and keep them employed, maybe a light will go off and that’s a big maybe.
The candidate should always run as if it is imperative that he win for the good of the country. He has to communicate that he feels that. McCain hardly ever came across like he really wanted to win. There should have been a greater sense of urgency.
Going to war seems to have been a mistake.
Because Bush stuck the flag of the party on the hill of that one issue, which we won’t see through to a successful conclusion, we have lost out on all the other issues for the forseeable future.
But to make my point... just think of the treatment that Huckabee was subject to here on FR. Or Thompson. Or Hunter. Yeah... let's run the conservatives.
And who did Rush want on the ballot? Oh, that’s right, he doesn’t do primaries. How helpful.
To the people who say they’re glad McCain lost: You obviously don’t give damn about our soldiers.
Obama is a liberal — that is the Democrat base. He received Dem support. McCain is a RINO — that is not the Republican base. He lost Republican support. It’s not rocket science here. When the Republicans run conservatives, THEY WIN. When they run RINOs, THEY LOSE. Very few of us wanted to vote for McCain. We turned out to vote against Obama. The party needs to get it, and quick. I won’t be voting against the Democrat again. It’s a sure sign we lose. I’ll vote third party unless the RNC gets their act together and moves solidly conservative. They can embrace and empower the Catholic vote and bring hispanics onboard and we will win. This is the future of the party and conservatism and we better quit running from it and get it right!
Analysis of the numbers from last night reveal that about as much of Obama’s party abandoned him as Republicans abandoned McCain. Coupling the shift of Moderates, as usual, to the more bright and shiny campaign, Mr-elect Obama also managed to get some of the younger voters to actually vote this time to make up the margin.
It's obvious you don't really listen to his show.
Oh come on? Have you been listening to Rush? He has criticized Bush plenty. We let the MSM pick our candidate and we let the MSM promote an empty suit while our best guys Newt, Mitt, Romney were benched by McCain. McCain had 30 minutes free on OReilly opposite the BHO infomercial in prime time and he went on Larry King. Brilliant!!! And Bush allowed himself to be smeared by “Bush Lied-People Died” and “No WMD in Iraq” It’s a shame, but no guts on our side. We let Wilson and Plame stand and we let 550 tons of Yellowcake move from 12 miles south of Baghdad to Canada and nobody knows it. Thank God we know the scandal of Palin wardrobe though. We even let that stand. Maddening.
Yup. So blindingly obvious, it actually requires a conscious effort of will NOT to see it, really.
As anathema as a real conservative was to McCain, Romney would have been even less likely to pick someone that contrasted his history as she would have done. Even if he did get past this and picked her, the Palin lipstick would have helped him less and he would have faced a worse result. The one group that seems to have shown up for McCain (and this due to Palin) was the Religious Right that would not have supported Romney.
First, I am unhappy that McCain lost. Second, I feel horrible for the slap in the face, if not kick in the groin, our military just endured. I do, however, have a question. The military based towns in North Carolina were the last to report and put Obama over the top. Who in those towns voted to not support our military?
jla - he of active mind
I've been thoroughly disgusted with some of Peggy Noonan's columns during the 2008 election, because she's the 'hotshot' that penned that silly "a thousand points of light" that Bush used, and then she penned the retort, "Read my lips". It seems Bush went from being a tough guy to being one who wanted 'to get along', and that's when the Democrats pounced. If they see anything they perceive as a sign of weakness, they become relentless in attacking. Unfortunately, we did/and do have too many RINO's in Congress, who lacked the integrity and intestinal fortitude to do battle and beat the Democrats. Every time one of ours responded to them, they were met with accusations from both parties as not trying to get along. Hogwash! That pony-tailed plant during the debates really set the stage for the Democrats big lie, "Can't we just get along?" They never had any intention of getting along with Republicans! The Clintons were among the worst hypocrites to ever occupy the White House, and the media never bothered to expose them. We have had the Democrats and the MSM beating up on Republicans full time since the Clinton's brought their dirty politics to DC.
I'm convinced we need term limits now to get rid of the corruptness throughout Congress! It's the only way we'll get rid of those left wing Socialists from California! They are now entrenched in Congress and they are nothing but obstructionists who don't give a darn about the nation...just lining their own pockets and POWER! Hopefully, we can elect some real Conservatives and restore some sense and fairness to our government. Also we need to pass an amendment that any federal judge or Supreme Court Justice who uses a foreign law to interpret our Constitution will automatically be impeached. We need to have them understand they are on the Courts to interpret law and not their agenda. I do hope Anthony Kennedy, Steven Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and David Souter are reading this!
Rush said that it was the GOP at large, not Conservatives. We need to purge those moderates that abandoned us, and replace them with people of our choosing.
Kirk's campaign performance was very impressive in the heart of Obamaland against a very well organized opponent. I live in the district and his opponent had 10 times more yard signs as far as I could see.
I hate his pro-abortion stand, but sure am glad we kept his seat.
Amen to your post. I am tired of voting for the lesser of two evils...and that is what you RINOs have offered me. I would rather lose because my principles are rejected than win by compromising MOST of what I believe in. Maybe that is the military vet coming out in me...don't know.
But I am tired of compromising. Bush compromised over and over again by not fighting the Mongrel hords on the left every time they slammed him. You early state primary people compromised by giving us McCain. The RNC leadership has compromised by putting the Trent Lott's, Denny Hasterts, etc into positions of power...rather than someone with nads.
To those on this thread advocating further moderate RINO's to "win"...get a clue. How about offering up a true conservative who can espouse those principles intelligently and fluently (and who has a set)...and then watch and see if those middle of the road voters don't flock to you. You had your chance. Why should we move to where you are? Stop telling me I have to support YOUR candidate. I think it should be YOU supporting our CONSERVATIVE candidates. After all...if you can't win your base...you are no good to me.
purge baby purge!
