I had a co-worker today who was unfazed by the “spread the wealth” argument. She told me she didn’t think she paid enough taxes. How are you supposed to respond to that?

My wife (I know, I know) and my brother both started spouting this nonsense in explaining their support for Obama, that they don’t pay enough in taxes. Huh?

Neither seems to understand that they’re free now to CHOOSE to GIVE anything they want to ANYONE because its THEIR OWN MONEY. Both of them think that government is the “most efficient way” to “take care of people” and that, sure, they could give it away themselves but then there’s no other way to make sure that the rich guy next door is paying “his fair share” too.

“How is what the rich guy next door does with his own money your problem?” I ask.

“Because we live in a COMMUNITY,” says my wife.

Good Lord.

I could go into more detail, but it’s scary how literally ignorant these attitudes are. I love my wife dearly, but hearing her say this stuff all of a sudden really bothers me. We already give a very large percentage of our monthly income away to our church and to other social organizations, I really don’t understand how taxes are supposed to be a better way to do this.
