They have, but not by the margins I feared going into tonight. My worse fear was of a Dole-like blowout and even with McCain losing the EC pretty badly, the raw vote tally won't bear that out. And yes, it matters because if O wins alot of the battlegrounds on razor thin margins with alot of fickle voters, then its easy come easy go I say.
CA and the left coast will probably put O up by 5 million votes or so, but that's not that far off from Bush's 3 million vote win in 2004 that was an EC squeaker. With the crap we had to endure the last 2 years and with the tanking stock market this year (manufactured imo), we should have been looking at a Dukakis style asskicking.
I guess what I'm getting at is that a) alot of undecideds broke for McCain (but not enough) and b) the Dems are ripe for a beatdown in 2010 and c) unless O pulls off a great economy out of his hat in the 4 years (doubtful), he is already very vulnerable going into 2012. Oh, and c) the Dem manufactured bad economy is now on their necks...gl with that.

One thing to come away from this whole mess, it always bothered me that we were hanging our hats on the weakest anecdotal crap...PUMA's, Bradley Effect, yard signs etc...next time disregard this nonsense. It's ironic that this thread is mirroring the one at DU 4 years ago that started off giddy with everyone reporting HUGE turnout in dem precincts, no turnout in rep precincts, everyone THEY know is voting for Kerry, then having the rug come out when the returns started coming in...
None of that stuff mattered, so 4 years from now don't get caught up in it.
