I worked my first year in graduate school as a coal miner, after I got a research fellowship I only did it in the summer. That’s how I experienced the UMW.

Wow! What an odd combination. Such interesting people here on FR!

So these guys are so corrupt that they would throw the whole union under the bus just for their personal gain!?

Not just the current crop of union mineworkers but the retirees also.
Their retirement fund, medical fund & I think even the strike fund is tied to production. Meaning so many tons produced so many bucks into those funds. I met Cecil Roberts when he was running for UMW President. I was in a small mom & pop store drinking a soda telling the owners (Nice people!) goodbye since I was heading back to school and this would be likely my last summer seeing them. In walked Robert shaking hands, his demeanor just screamed sleaze. There are a lot of miners see right through him but view him as a necessary evil.
