So either Barry's lying through his teeth -again- or the union and the 'Rats are going to do to the coal industry what they've done to Detroit.

They already did it to the coal industry in PA.
There are very few union mines left. Actually, there are very few miners left in SW PA. The issue is that we depend on coal for energy. Cap and trade will make energy in this part of the country unaffordable and make business uncompetitive.

I find this more dramatic than what he says about bankrupting the coal industry:

The only thing that I have said with respect to coal, I havent been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as an ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way we should pursue it.

So, no matter what he says, coal is out from an ideological standpoint, not whether or how much it pollutes. So he doesn't even want clean coal.

Well, that’s going to go over big in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. I see a 2-3% swing in a couple of “battleground” states

We can't forget Montana which ships a lot of coal to the Duluth Superior area which gets shipped to Canadian coal plants throughout the Great Lakes region. I will try to get the information to the Duluth market but someone who knows the Montana coal industry better than I do will need to get the message out there in Big Sky Country. Maybe I'll try pinging BigSkyFreeper and some of the Montana Board.

Amazing...

“So, if someone wants to build a coal-fired plant, they can... It’s just that it will bankrupt them.”

Fortunately we spun off all of union mines a couple of years ago and we are now union free. I have also sent this to mid-managers at the mine level who in turn will end up sending to their supervisor’s etc. It will get down to the miner himself.

It looks like the number of miners who belong to a union has dropped significantly over the years, but I don't know how much of that's due to fewer people being needed to do the mining.

And on a related note, from this recent link...

Daily Spotlight on UMWA

We got all of our local presidents to sign letters to the nearly 6,000 pensioners in Pennsylvania in support of Barack Obama. We are leafleting at every mine and non-mine organized unit and our members are taking part in phone banks and labor walks regularly....

Note to said pensioners: Why don't you all ask the members of the UAW how well voting 'Rat has worked out for them.

He thinks he can tax America into prosperity, I'm sure this thinking comes about by his doubtless need to make America a Just Society. His solutions will be to control us all into a greater form of happiness, but its a happiness according to his standards.

If he's anything he's a Professor who is good at pontificating about what everyone else's faults are.

Prayers for the Durbin family. Losing a child is a tragedy no matter what political side of the aisle you fall on. Details?

LISTEN UP NORTH CAROLINA:

Article from Christian Science Monitor.

""If they don’t start building coal plants, it’s going to be an economic prosperity problem for the country,” says Richard Storm, CEO of Storm Technologies, an Albemarle, N.C., company that specializes in optimizing coal-fired power plants. “We need coal. Coal is a national treasure.”

There are very few union mines left.

IIRC, PA's not-a-right-to-work state. Are there non-union mines somehow, or just no new mines being opened?

IOW, it’s hard to grow an economy that’s starving to death for want of affordable fuel.

The campaign should have been running ads on this for the past month.
They didn’t know the audio was out there?

I sent this to America’s Power and to FactCheck.org (who says that McCain’s ads accusing Obama of being anti-coal are false).

Does anyone know who does the radio ads running in south central PA saying they are both for clean coal?

......I don’t know how much of that’s due to fewer people being needed to do the mining.....I asked the guys in Kentuck about this. They said just look around.

What he meant was that fewer miners are required, but most importantly, mining requires fairly well educated miners. The complexity of the mining operations coupled with the intense technical regulatory compliance demands a quantum leap in educational requirements.
