Coalition Troops Kill 19 Militants, Detain 3 in Eastern Afghanistan
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 2008 Coalition forces killed 19 armed militants and detained three suspects Oct. 31 during multiple operations to disrupt the Haqqani, Taliban, and al-Qaida homemade-bomb and foreign-fighter networks in eastern Afghanistan.
In Dara Noor District, coalition forces targeted a known al-Qaida leader believed to facilitate the movement of foreign fighters and weapons into Konar province. The leader also is believed to be in contact with other militants in the region, coordinating attacks against coalition forces and civilians.
As the forces began a search of the targeted compound they were immediately engaged by two armed militants inside the first building. Coalition forces responded with small-arms fire, killing both militants.
Following the engagement, the forces moved to a second building in the compound. As they approached the building multiple armed militants exited the building, attempting to maneuver on the forces and engaging them with small-arms fire.
Coalition forces returned fire, killing five armed militants, including one armed female. One suspect was detained during the operation.
A second operation, in Nadar Shahkot District, targeted a militant known to have ties to both the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist networks. The target also is known to coordinate and direct bomb attacks in the region.
As the troops approached the vehicle the target was in, he and another militant inside reached for AK-47s. Faced with the hostile intent, the forces engaged both small-arms fire, killing them.
Upon a search of the vehicle, coalition forces discovered explosives. The vehicle was destroyed because of the threat it presented to both the forces and local civilians.
Also in Nader Shah Kowt, Coalition forces killed 10 armed militants and detained two suspects during an operation directed at a known Haqqani facilitator of homemade bombs and suicide bombers.
As the forces attempted to search the compound they were engaged by several groups of armed militants with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades. Coalition forces responded with small-arms fire, killing six, including the targeted Haqqani militant.
A search of the compound revealed multiple AK-47s, an RPG, RPG rounds, a pistol and other military style equipment.
As the forces attempted to leave the compound they took heavy fire from militants inside a building. Coalition forces engaged the militants with precision, close-air support to neutralize the threat.

“Suicide attack in South Waziristan threatens government’s truce with Taliban”
By BILL ROGGIO
November 2, 2008 8:50 PM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A suicide bomber struck at Pakistani paramilitary troops in the Taliban-controlled South Waziristan tribal agency. The attack threats are recent truce signed between a local Taliban commander and the military.
Eight paramilitary soldiers from the Frontier Corps were killed after a suicide bomber rammed a truck packed with explosives into a checkpoint outside the Zalai Kla Fort near Wana. The suicide bomber was attempting to enter the fort, a Pakistani Army spokesman said.
The suicide attack took place just two days after a US Predator strike came close to killing Mullah Nazir, a senior Taliban leader in South Waziristan. Nazir and Tahir Yuldashev, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, were the targets of the strike. Nazir was lightly wounded in the attack. It is not known if Yuldashev was among those killed.
Six “foreigners” — a term used to describe Arabs or other non-Pakistani al Qaeda members — and a Taliban operative are reported to have been killed.
The suicide attack broke the most recent peace agreement between the government and the Taliban in South Waziristan.”
“Britain extradites three Tunisian terror suspects to Italy”
Sun Nov 2, 2:00 am ET
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “ROME (AFP) Three Tunisian men accused of terrorism links by Italian prosecutors arrived in Milan under heavy security after being extradited from Britain, Italian police said.
Habib Ignaoua, Mohamed Khemiri and Ali Chehidi, who arrived in Milan on Saturday, were arrested in the London and Manchester areas last year as part of coordinated raids across Europe against an alleged Italian-based network recruiting fighters for Iraq and Afghanistan.
European warrants for their arrest had been issued by an investigating magistrate attached to courts in Milan who accused them of plotting to organise the recruitment of volunteers ready to commit acts of terror from Milan.”

Dem. Congressman: “Let [Russia] Invade Georgia. It’s Right Next to Them
The Weekly Standard ^ | 11/03/08 | John McCormack
Posted on November 3, 2008 3:42:04 AM PST by DocT111
At an event at a Boca Raton synagogue, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said that the United States should let Russia invade Georgia. Beginning at the 3:50 mark in the following YouTube video, which was recorded by Pamela Geller of the blog Atlas Shrugs, Nadler says:
We have not been willing to put our priorities properly. We have not been willing to say ... “Hey Russia, we won’t expand NATO into the Ukraine and Georgia, right next to your borders, if you cooperate with us on Iran.” ...
I think Iran and Israel are a hell of a lot more important than expanding NATO to Russia’s borders. Why should we? What do we need it for?
Someone in the crowd says: “Because they invaded Georgia.”
Nadler retorts: “So let ‘em invade Georgia. It’s right next to them. Would we tolerate a foreign—a Russian army in Mexico? Which is more important to us Georgia or Israel, frankly?”
Another voice in the crowd asks Nadler: “What is more important to us Czechoslovakia or Austria?”
“That’s a completely separate kind of question,” Nadler replies.

“Terrorists try to infiltrate UK’s top labs”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The security services have intercepted up to 100 suspects posing as postgraduate students who aim to acquire weapons material and expertise”
Mark Townsend, defence correspondent
The Observer, Sunday November 2 2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Dozens of suspected terrorists have attempted to infiltrate Britain’s top laboratories in order to develop weapons of mass destruction, such as biological and nuclear devices, during the past year.
The security services, MI5 and MI6, have intercepted up to 100 potential terrorists posing as postgraduate students who they believe tried accessing laboratories to gain the materials and expertise needed to create chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons, the government has confirmed.
It follows warnings from MI5 to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office that al-Qaeda’s terror network is actively seeking to recruit scientists and university students with access to laboratories containing deadly viruses and weapons technology.”

VENEZUELAN NATIONAL CONVICTED OF OPERATING AS ILLEGAL AGENT OF VENEZUELAN GOVERNMENT IN THE UNITED STATES
MIAMI, FLA. — A Miami federal jury convicted Venezuelan national Franklin Duran, on charges of acting and conspiring to act as an agent of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Venezuela) within the United States, without prior notification to the Attorney General of the United States, as required by law, announced R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Patrick Rowan, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, and Jonathan I. Solomon, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Miami Field Office.
In December 2007, Duran, 41, along with co-defendants Moises Maionica, 36, Antonio Jose Canchica Gomez, 37, Rodolfo Wanseele Paciello, 41, and Carlos Kauffmann, 36, were charged in a two-Count indictment for their participation in a series of meetings, beginning in August 2007, in South Florida with Guido Alejandro Antonini Wilson.
According to testimony at trial, the purpose of these meetings was to procure Antoninis help in concealing the source and destination of, and the role of the government of Venezuela in, the intended delivery of an $800,000 cash contribution to the political campaign of a then-Argentine presidential candidate. The last meeting took place on December 11, 2007, when defendants Duran, Maionica, and another individual met with Antonini in South Florida to discuss the creation of false documents in furtherance of the cover-up.
According to the evidence, various high-ranking Venezuelan government officials, including officials from the Office of the Vice President of the Republic, members of the DISIP (Intelligence and Preventive Services Directorate), and a high-ranking official from the Justice Ministry of Venezuela, were aware of this matter and directed the defendants activities in South Florida. The defendants told Antonini that these funds had been destined for the campaign of a candidate in the Argentine presidential election.
U.S. Attorney Acosta stated, This is not the first time that unregistered foreign agents have sought to do their nations bidding in our backyard, in disregard of our laws and our sovereignty. Through this prosecution, as in the past, we voice our continued commitment to safeguarding our borders and our national integrity from intrusion by unregistered foreign agents who seek to maintain their presence hidden.
Todays guilty verdict and the prior guilty pleas by three other defendants in this case should serve as a strong warning to others who operate illegally in the United States on behalf of foreign governments, said Patrick Rowan, Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
When unregistered foreign agents believe that they can operate on our soil with impunity and disregard for U.S. laws, it undermines the national security of our country and the safety of our citizens. This case demonstrates our resolve in ensuring that activities conducted in the United States are free from illegal foreign influence.” said Jonathan I. Solomon, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Miami Field Office.
Sentencing for defendant Duran has been scheduled for January 12, 2009. At sentencing, Duran faces a statutory maximum penalty of five (5) years imprisonment on the conspiracy count (Count 1) and ten (10) years imprisonment on the substantive count of acting as an unregistered foreign agent (Count 2). Defendants Maionica, Kauffmann, and Wanseele previously pled guilty and are awaiting sentencing. No sentencing date has been set yet. Defendant Canchica Gomez remains at large.
Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for its work in this investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas J. Mulvihill and John C. Shipley and Senior Trial Attorney Clifford I. Rones, of the Counterespionage Section at the Justice Departments National Security Division.

Gunman on 101 Freeway overpass in Santa Barbara is arrested (Obama supporter)
LA Times ^ | 11/3/08 | Victoria Kim
Posted on November 3, 2008 3:43:12 PM PST by BurbankKarl
A masked gunman who was waving an American flag on a freeway overpass in Santa Barbara was in police custody after an hours-long standoff that shut down the freeway in both directions and caused a rush-hour traffic snarl, officials said.
The man, 28-year-old Edward Van Tassel, first handed over his handgun to authorities and asked for a Barack Obama sign, which he posted on a chain-link fence on the overpass along with the flag he was holding, said Sgt. Lorenzo Duarte of the Santa Barbara Police Department.
The freeway was reopened shortly after the incident was resolved.
No shots were fired. The revolver Van Tassel was holding was not loaded, Duarte said. He was arrested by SWAT officers around 11 a.m. without incident.
Police used a megaphone to negotiate with Van Tassel, who was standing on the overpass on La Cumbre Road just a few miles north of downtown Santa Barbara, according to authorities.
Officers said Van Tassel, who is believed to be a Santa Barbara resident, appeared to be shouting antiwar statements.
Authorities said they received the report about a suspicious man on the overpass shortly after 7 a.m., Duarte said. Van Tassel was dressed in brown fatigues and had a black bag next to his feet, according to officials.
