Yeah, one foot in death’s door!
From "Dreams" Even Jane or Zeituni could say things that surprised me. "The Luo are intelligent but lazy," they would say. Or "The Kikuyu are money-grubbing but industrious." Or "The Kalenjins -- well, you can see what's happened to the country since they took over."
_______________
A FEW MONTHS after my twenty-first birthday, a stranger called to give me the news. I was living in New York at the time. I was in the middle of making myself breakfast, with coffee on the stove and two eggs in the skillet, when my roommate handed me the phone. The line was thick and static. Barry? Barry, is this you? Yes
Whos this? Yes, Barry
this is your Aunt Jane. In Nairobi. Can you hear me? Im sorrywho did you say you were? Aunt Jane. Listen, Barry, your father is dead. He is killed in a car accident. Hello? Can you hear me? I say, your father is dead. Barry, please call your uncle in Boston and tell him. I cant talk now, okay, Barry. I will try to call you again
Obama’s narration of his Kenyan experience in the subsequent weeks reveals an impressive understanding of his father’s land: the first supper at aunt Jane’s house at Kariakor; his visit to the Mathare slum with aunt Sarah; his night out with brother Roy at Garden Square; his travel by matatu to Alego and Kendu Bay — his great grandfather’s place where uncles insisted he taste the local brew chang’aa; his diarrhoea attack that his grandfather’s sister insisted to treat with local herbs and bitter roots.

I think that it’s interesting she used her work address instead of her “flat”.
I did find a blip on his African relatives attending the event in a Jet article from 2005:
"Much of Obama's family, some from as far away as Hawaii and Kenya, traveled to Washington for the momentous event. They all had dinner together a day earlier. 'This is a good excuse for a family reunion, except you don't get to see them but for a couple minutes at a time,' says wife Michelle, with the couple's two daughters in tow. 'This was the first time the children have met many of their relatives.' "
Here's the link to the full article:
But now I wonder if Aunt Jane is the Jane Onyango of the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya.
If she's elderly and frail, then at 61, I must be dead and don't know it :-)
I only wish I could believe this story will cause some to reconsider voting for Obama.
WHAT?!?! I didn't realize that she was 56! Thanks for pointing that out Mrs. P.
Here's a clue dj..... I don't know what planet you're from, but on this one 56 ISN'T old!
I'm almost that age and do not consider myself "elderly" or "frail". Those terms are reserved for someone 70+ at the least.
Maybe you should check out DU of the Daily KOS. They'd like your kind of thinking.
She’s 56. Get that. Old, my,.....er.... foot....

I joined Experience Corps because: I felt that I should help the children in my community. I love people and enjoy interacting with them. My friend had so many wonderful things to say about her work with Experience Corps. Also, I was idle, and this was a chance to get involved.
I know Im making a difference when: I see the change in children I have worked with. All children are fine as long as they have a good foundation, but there is no foundation without literacy.
My favorite part of tutoring with Experience Corps is: Being able to help children succeed. As an older adult I feel I have much to give young people - as well as my peers. Experience Corps has given me that opportunity.
Working with students teaches me: Just how much I can impact the education of children in the school system. I learn different strategies and approaches to help children and also to improve myself. In addition, being an Experience Corps member has taught me that I can be a leader in my community.
