It had to disturb a lot of people on a subliminal level, giving them the feeling they were being manipulated (because they were). The church hymn music as though this was a spiritual event for the messiah, the rising oratory that was mindnumbingly vapid, the final adulation of the mindless crowd. Cult of personality at its scariest.
