A record number of Californians has registered to vote in the run-up to next week's general election, with voter rolls surpassing 17 million for the first time.
The secretary of state's office said Friday that the state has 17.3 million registered voters.
That's up from the previous peak in February 2005, when California had 16.6 million voters.

Having visited Los Angelese a few years back, that might actually be a low-ball estimate for the homeless population in CA.
Anyhow, I’m in Ohio and we have a great social program for the homeless. It’s called winter.

Democrats now account for 44.4 percent of the state's voters, up from 43 percent four years ago. Republicans have lost about 317,000 voters over the last four years and now account for 31.4 percent of the electorate, down from 34.7 percent in October 2004. No surprise there. Dems recruit inmates and conservatives flee the CA GOP liberals who have overtaken the party. A double whammy.
