Hollywood insiders rip MSNBC, defend Palin
Reuters ^

Posted on 10/27/2008 7:11:28 PM PDT by Chet 99

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In a room full of television industry executives, no one seemed inclined to defend MSNBC on Monday for what some were calling its lopsidedly liberal coverage of the presidential election.

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

Bloodworth-Thomason even suggested a defense of Palin and her supporters should be written into TV programing, just as she went out of her way to portray Southern women as smart in her hit TV show "Designing Women."

Frankly, Olbermann’s political leanings are no different than Brokaw’s. He just presents them in a maniacal way.

Brokaw pretends to be intellectual.

Same crap, different delivery.

If Obama wins KO loses. He is only effective(in liberal eyes) on the attack. If liberals were in power they would have no reason to get their “fix” watching him bellyache about all things Republican. He would simply fade away.

They’re just disgruntled hillary supporters thinking about what might have been.

IMO, not much difference between her heinous and his lowness.

Trash is trash and they’re both traitors.

If I ever ran into Olberman, I’d probably end up in jail for battery.

I’ve never seen “Designing Women” in my life. Not once.

I have a vague idea about the characters from some of the promo spots they used to run, but I’ve never seen the show.

I think it’s because as a man I have a phobia about “designing women”...... :^)

“Sarah Palin Is Very Smart” [Greg Pollowitz]

Via Hugh Hewitt, so says former Ms. Magazine editor-in-chief Elaine Lafferty. We’ll see, however, if Lafferty’s Daily Beast posting gets as much media attention as that other Daily Beast posting. An excerpt:

It’s difficult not to froth when one reads, as I did again and again this week, doubts about Sarah Palin’s “intelligence,” coming especially from women such as PBS’s Bonnie Erbe, who, as near as I recall, has not herself heretofore been burdened with the Susan Sontag of Journalism moniker. As Fred Barnes — God help me, I’m agreeing with Fred Barnes — suggests in The Weekly Standard, these high toned and authoritative dismissals come from people who have never met or spoken with Sarah Palin. Those who know her, love her or hate her, offer no such criticism. They know what I know, and I learned it from spending just a little time traveling on the cramped campaign plane this week: Sarah Palin is very smart.

I’m a Democrat, but I’ve worked as a consultant with the McCain campaign since shortly after Palin’s nomination. Last week, there was the thought that as a former editor-in-chief of Ms. magazine as well as a feminist activist in my pre-journalism days, I might be helpful in contributing to a speech that Palin had long wanted to give on women’s rights.

Now by “smart,” I don’t refer to a person who is wily or calculating or nimble in the way of certain talented athletes who we admire but suspect don’t really have serious brains in their skulls. I mean, instead, a mind that is thoughtful, curious, with a discernable pattern of associative thinking and insight. Palin asks questions, and probes linkages and logic that bring to mind a quirky law professor I once had. Palin is more than a “quick study”; I’d heard rumors around the campaign of her photographic memory and, frankly, I watched it in action. She sees. She processes. She questions, and only then, she acts. What is often called her “confidence” is actually a rarity in national politics: I saw a woman who knows exactly who she is.

Hell has not frozen over. The new-found “generousity” of spirit toward Palin, etc is because they are utterly confident that they are going to rout the gop.

They see themselves on top, the ones in control, they have to manage perception. This is PR people.

Oh sure, it’s a week before the election and these liberals are FINALLY admitting the coverage is as left as it can go. Where have they been!

Exactly...it's not like this bias is a new phenomenon.

People said basically the same thing about Rush Limbaugh after W. was elected yet Rush has been able to stay on top of talk radio with a Republican in the WH for 8 yrs.
