Americans have cut back on buying cars, furniture and clothes in a tough economy, but there's one consumer item that's still enjoying healthy sales: guns. Purchases of firearms and ammunition have risen 8 to 10 percent this year, according to state and federal data.
Several variables drive sales, but many dealers, buyers and experts attribute the increase in part to concerns about the economy and fears that if Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois wins the presidency, he will join with fellow Democrats in Congress to enact new gun controls. Obama has said that he believes in an individual right to bear arms but that he also supports "common-sense safety measures."
"Even though [Obama] has a lot going for him, he's not very pro-gun," said Paul Pluff, a spokesman for Massachusetts-based Smith & Wesson, which has reported higher sales. Gun enthusiasts are "going to go out and get [firearms] while they still can." "Generally, we know that hard economic times always result in firearm sales," said James M. Purtilo of Silver Spring, who publishes the Tripwire Newsletter.
Bob Leyshion, who visited a gun shop in Manassas recently, said the economic crisis and Obama's lead in the polls were on his mind.
Gun owners haven't been especially thrilled about the prospect of Sen. John McCain in the White House. They see the Arizona Republican as less of a threat than Obama, but they are still angry over McCain's support for certain gun-control measures in the past, such as requiring purchasers at gun shows to undergo background checks.
Gun owners said McCain's moose-hunting running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is far more likely to champion Second Amendment rights.

Wash Poop is such a crappy paper (majority shareholder is Buffett). “Uncertain times” - no it is not uncertain times it is a known gun banner and marxist in Obama. I got a mailer from the NRA and Wayne LaPierre said Obama is the worst person ever running for Pres on guns. People know Obama is an intolerant marxist who gets angry when people speak up. We also do not want America to follow in the Chicago model. A city with an astronomical murder rate that is also bankrupt and has insane taxes.
The “People” clinging to that which is their final protection against those who would forcibly strip from them what they cling to.
Just got an email today from a friend requesting a pistol recommendation from someone I took shooting a year ago or more.
He didn’t say why, but knowing him, I think he is concerned with the political future.

Simply WOW!
This is journalism on par with Pravda.
Let the games begin.
They are scared to death by Obama and his minions of Obamabots.
I ventured over to DUland the other day and read how they are “taking to the streets” if Obama doesn’t win.
But the most interesting thing I’ve read is that the police in many large urban areas are expecting riots, even if Obama wins because they say celebrations (after sports events, etc.) often result in riots even if the home team wins. Go figure!
I’ve been stocking up since pre-klinton.
I’m about to buy a Sig P225 myself before that socialist has a chance trample the 2nd Amendment.
Last couple of days, I’ve been shopping around for my monthly BLOAT session ... some things are kinda hard to find.
It isn't even debatable...Obama is big on gun control, another issue many silly people over looked by not vetting Obama to begin with; he is also a faux uniter, faux promoter of freedom, faux pro-military, faux American with Marxist friends and mentors - a believer in Black Liberation Theology so he is a racist also. We are looking at a revival of the Civil Rights Movement which should have been accomplished by now but is in some areas, like Chicago, worse than ever.
Have my order in for a Springfield Armory XDm .40. For similar reasons.
NICS checks were very brisk this weekend, going by the documentation numbers, background checks for NICS were up IIRC 2000%
Unfortunately, all of those SN’s were on 4473 forms - you think your firearms are not registered?
Dream on, 4473 forms ARE REGISTRATION !!
WaPo made be scared to think Americans will fight to keep the press free . In an 0bama administration , WaPo would slate the socialist agenda with pride .
Get ‘em while you can...
