Gun, ammo sales increase as election nears (Obama spurring the economy!)

Several gun stores in the valley have seen an increase in firearm and ammunition sales lately. News 3's Dan Ball explains why the election and the economic crisis have people pulling the trigger.

Jeffrey Bergman and his sister came to the Gun Store on Tropicana to practice their aim.

"We've had things like break-ins in the neighborhood," says Jeffrey. "We're concerned about the increase in crime in the area and protecting ourselves."

Gun Store employees like Randy Formanek say they are seeing more and more folks like Jeff come into the store.

"They see a necessity to arm themselves so that they can defend themselves," explains Randy. "You're going to see more and more people without jobs, more and more economic desperation. When people get desperate, they do stupid things, and you need to prepare yourself for the eventuality of that."

Besides self-protection, gun experts and gun users at the Gun Store say they are also concerned about what the next President may do about gun control.

It’s on my list.....only a matter of when;-)

My dad has one, and although I have never shot it, it has a beautiful feel.

I don’t own any firearms. If Obama is elected, I will immediately buy a handgun. I don’t believe for a moment that he will leave the 2nd amendment alone.

“Hmmm, I sold mine in the newspaper. Perfectly legal in the good old state of Alabama!”

Well all of mine will suddenly be “lost”.

Yeah, its Nov 5th, if Obama loses and you live in an urban area.

Modern smokeless cartridges, stored properly (cool dry place) will last more or less forever. True military ammo, with sealed primers and bullets, will last even longer.

No trespassing will not mean anything when the govt decides it will just take away private ownership of land.

Don’t let that fool you. Think about what they did after Katrina. They confiscated all the weapons. They did it with the help of LEO shipped in from places like NY who were really gung-ho into getting the weapons.

If it ever gets to confiscation it ain’t gonna be a friendly encounter. No one will know when they will come and believe me people will not be prepared for it. JMHO.

I just traded for a used KelTec PF9 with a laser on it. For a cheap looking gun it is reliable, light & comfortable to carry. The long trigger pull is a bit hard to get used to but overall I really like it.

True. The sign is a mere formality much like a lock serves only to keep an honest man honest. A deterrent, stating that there will be concurrences of an intrusion on my property.

As for the gubmint taking my single acre homestead, let’em bring it on. Everything I've worked my entire adult life for is here. I won't go down w/o a fight.

I'm talking about being 100% reliable, BTW. I have some Turkish 8mm Mauser ammo with 1944 headstamps, and have only had like one of them fail to fire, and I may be mis-remembering that (it may had been my 1940's era .303 - I don't know for sure).

Years ago, I bought some GI 30-40 Krag in bandoleers, mainly as a curiosity, since I never saw any WW1-vintage ammo. The cases were dated 1917, and the bandoleers showed they were packed in 1918. Ten loose rounds per pocket, with the pocket sewn shut with light thread.

Each of the rounds had a split down the case neck, due to metal fatigue. After all those years under tension from seating the bullet, the brass just cracked, letting the air in and causing the powder to oxidize. There was no danger from the round, because the bullet would just fall out as you were handling it. The real danger comes from a squib that would leave the bullet lodged in the barrel.

I've had no problem with 50-year-old ammo sealed in the original can. 90-year-old ammo is probably approaching the 100% failure mark due to metal fatigue.

Who knows? Today's brass-cased (as opposed to commie steel-cased) ammo made today may have a hundred year shelf like. I'd like to be around to check that out.
