I know that it sounds cut-throat, but McCain could use this, saying something like, "Senator Obama has called on his supporters to 'get in our faces' and now we find out that a young woman, a loyal-campaign worker who is a volunteer, was violently attacked and the letter 'B' was literally carved in her face. Senator Obama, is this the kind of 'in their faces' that you were talking about? I deplore this violence and eagerly anticipate Obama's statement deploring this violence in his name" I believe that is the only way people will hear about the incident, and that will be from the disbelieving press.
