No. There are no security checks for congress and presidency.

But their staff have to pass background checks.

That is due to the fact that MOC's and the president are elected by the people, they have been endowed with the Public Trust, members of the administration/staff are not. It is this very reason that the General Voting Public is entitled to know every single blessed thing about the backgrounds of those who choose to stand for election. We have the right to decide our vote based on nothing more than character as it has been demonstrated in a candidate's past if we wish. This idea that the past is irrelevant, "what I did ___ years ago is not an issue to my running for office today" and all the rest is a fallacy.

When deciding to endow someone with the Public Trust, the first obligation of the voter is determining whether or not that person is trustworthy.
