That's the point, in 84 Mondale/Ferraro drew 100,000 in their voting base, NYC, and in 2004 Obama draws 100,000 in a heavily urban and African-American area St. Louis/East St. Louis.
With the exception of one picture, all the shots I saw were close-ups of him and the people on stage behind him. The applause and cheers were muted and subdued, not nearly as loud or enthusiastic as one would expect from 100,000 people. The one picture supposedly of the crowd appeared to be a wide-angle view from the side of the Arch Grounds. (In the photo the arch looked distorted, and the "crowd" appeared to me to be a mirrored image.)
