The Buckley Son Rises (and runs)(Kathleen Parker BARF Alert)
National Review ^ | October 16, 2008 | Kathleen Parker

Christopher Buckley’s endorsement of Barack Obama — followed by his abrupt departure from the back page of the magazine his father founded, National Review — has caused a ripple of contempt from the conservative Right.

Nay, make that a tsunami of hostility. An avalanche of venom. A cataclysm of ... well, you get the idea. People are mad. Good riddance, they say, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Christopher Buckley’s endorsement of Barack Obama — followed by his abrupt departure from the back page of the magazine his father founded, National Review — has caused a ripple of contempt from the conservative Right.

Let us proceed, gingerly.

I am not a passive bystander to these events. Buckley is a friend, as are other members of his family, especially Uncle Reid, with whom I have worked for several years. National Review is home to many friends, and its online editor, Kathryn Jean Lopez, kindly subscribes to my column. Like Buckley, I have enjoyed a decent fragging for suggesting that Sarah Palin excuse herself from the Republican ticket.

What gives here?

What does it mean that the right cannot politely entertain dissenting opinions within its ranks? What, if anything, does it portend that Buckley The Younger has bolted from the Right, even resigning from the family flagship?

She really thinks that she and Buckley matter.

It's cute, in a way.

psssstt! Kathleen......you’re gone too. You don’t pick a fight with the guy next to you in the trenches when the enemy’s coming up the hill.

Ah, git over yerself, Kathy baby. Remember the first five hundred names in the phone book? Maybe it wasn’t just a cute aphorism. You write a column and your bottom line is a deadline, for most of the rest of us, a bottom line is an actual bottom line. Sheesh.

I still don’t even know who she is but I know who he is.She is so clueless. There is plenty of time after the election for intra-party hissy fits. She knew ahead of time the leftys would take her Palin ranting and use it against the party in the election. What is at stake is the communization of America and she’s all put out that she got what she deserved as did Buckley. Imean...c’mon...

Children of the famous often try to make their mark by doing stupid things. He’s just another form of Paris Hilton. He’s not worth a picture so he can be ignored.

First off, there is plenty of disagreement among conservatives. If you don’t believe there is, perhaps you are not in the company of enough conservatives.

Secondly, in case you weren’t paying attention, we are in the middle of a freaking election, and the media was already doing a good enough job of running down Governor Palin in every way possible. Then you, ‘conservative columnist’, opted to wuss out and join the hit mob.

I guess you think this is all just one big game. Perhaps it is, when you haven’t been paying attention.

My email to her:

Subject: Purge

For your part in siding with the enemy, during this election, you, and your ilk, will be purged. Try making a living selling your swill to liberals. For a start, we’ll demand NR drop your gibberish and bring back Ann Coulter.

What Parker, Buckley, Noonan and the rest of them don't understand is that conservatives are sick and tired of being bashed and told they are wrong. Every time something promising or hopeful comes up, it is aggressively shut down by the MSM. We don't need a Parker or a Noonan joining Eleanor Clift in mocking Palin. We've heard it a million times before gals—if we want to read about what a “joke” Palin is, harpies like Clift do a much better job than muddled, out-of-touch writers like Noonan and Parker.

As for Buckley, his reasoning for supporting Obama is laughably shallow. Obama is going to enact huge tax increases and wealth redistribution programs and will be able to do so with a 60 seat Dem majority. Buckley believes he won't because of some nonsense about “temperament.” And it also seems like he believes the MSM propaganda about McCain turning “nasty” during the campaign. This is evidence of sheer, air-headed stupidity. Its amazing that something like Christopher Buckley could be produced by William F. Buckley but I guess history is full of examples of famous people producing duds as offspring.

It’s time we start shunning these people. They don’t exist. Noonan, Parker, Krauthammer—to heck with the lot of them.

Kathleen, for some inexplicable reason you do not get it. While I admire you on a personal level, you simply do not - or cannot - grasp that there is a time and a place, a season, for everything.

When the fire breathing MSM is hell-bent on destroying you in a political battle, it is neither the time nor the place to pick up a sword and start swinging away wildly at the good guys! We all have criticisms for various Republicans or Republican strategies, but in the heat of the battle you SHUT YOUR MOUTH and follow orders so that you are not overrun and decapitated by the enemy.

After the battle or the war there is time to look back and address minor issues of tactics. After the battle is the time to question certain decisions. It is difficult enough to fight the conservative battle against the onslaught of the MSM, so there is little tolerance for those who would seek to cut the hamstrings of our warriors.

Does this help you understand why we did not cotton to the call you and Chris made to have our field general Palin removed from the heat of the battle? Your comments fully aided and abetted the political enemy. Your comments caused a lot of political damage to the good guys. Why is this so hard for you to grasp?

Buckley Jr. waited for his fathers death to become dissolute. His love child in Fla is exhibit number one.

Buckley Jr was estranged from his father for many years. We can see why now.

What does it mean that the right cannot politely entertain dissenting opinions within its ranks?

Sticking a rhetoric shiv in the back of the GOP VP candidate during the heat of an election is not equivalent to 'entertaining dissenting opinions within its ranks'.

I agree re: Noonan—she's been a lost cause for years. Parker is pretty bad too but maybe she's redeemable. I respect Krauthammer. He doesn't think Palin is a good choice but he isn't nasty or mocking about it. He's entitled to his opinion and I'm not going to slam him for expressing it—he's done so in a respectful way and is disgusted by those who are bashing Palin.

As for Parker and Buckley, one of the main reasons they have for jumping ship is the fact that they've gotten some nasty emails. Spare me. Every columnist gets nasty emails. That is an excuse. If they are really such weak sisters, they need to retire—which is what they have effectively done. They'll get trotted out by the Left every once in a while as part of the ex-Conservative freak show (like David Brock—remember him?). Buckley, especially, will probably get some mileage out of whoring himself out to the MSM to comment on how nasty and nutty Conservatives have become.

Here’s my letter to “the dishy Kathleen Parker.”

Dear Ms. Parker,

When you mention that Republicans are not deserving of winning this time, a lot of us happen to disagree. That’s what is at stake here. If you go out on a limb, you shouldn’t be shocked when it gets sawed off. The bulk of Republicans want to win. You may be a purist all you want. I - and many others - happen to think too much is riding on this election to entrust the country to the hands of a Marxist (as opposed to less than perfect Republicans), so don’t mind me if I think you’re both idiots, all your wonderful columns beforehand notwithstanding.

Very Sincerely,
...
