Problem: the U.S. Bullion Depository at Fort Knox only has about $135B in gold on hand. How could we back the trillions of circulating dollars with only that much gold?

The total amount of gold in the CBs plus in private hands will go way up in "dollar value." WAY up. For many centuries, an annual salary might have been a few pounds of silver, for example.
