People tend to forget that Milk was not shot for being gay.
He was shot for being an asshole politician. An asshole who stuck it to a fellow politician and then laughed in his face. Milk choose to act in an uncivilized manner and was met with an uncivilized response.

Oh I was going to make a remark something along the line of “what’s the difference” but thought better of it.

It was Milk who outed
Oliver Sipple, the Vietnam veteran and former marine who quite probably saved President Ford's life when he deflected Sara Jane Moore's gun during
the second of two 1976 assassination attempts. Sipple would have preferred that his sexual orientation remain private but Milk could not resist revealing it to the media. Sipple had some real grief over the revelation, including a falling out with his family. He already had some personal problems and the politically motivated "outing" practically destroyed him. He died a broken man in 1989, but he had outlived Milk by 10 years.

...and no one will mention the corruption of Milk and George Moscone either, who owed their elections to a “community organizer” named the Rev. Jim Jones and his volunteers. Both Moscone and Milk defended this so-called “Reverend” when the dam broke with the stories of abuse at his cult and he fled to South America, where he and his followers drank (or in many cases were forced) to drink the “Kool Aid.”
