Joan grew up in California, graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, and got her grounding in journalism as a reporter for the Associated Press in Germany. After moving to Wisconsin, she earned a master’s degree in journalism and worked as a freelance writer before joining Madison Magazine as managing editor. She spent eight years working in various management, communication, and programming capacities for the nonprofit Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, including serving as editor of its award-winning magazine, Wisconsin People & Ideas.
