Conservatives Viewed Bailout Plan as Last Straw
new york times ^ | 9/27/08 | CARL HULSE

The seeds of the House Republican revolt over the financial industry bailout were sown in an e-mail message circulated Monday night as internal animosity built quickly over the Bush administration’s request for $700 billion to prevent an economic collapse.

In a message to members of the conservative Republican Study Committee, leaders of the bloc of more than 100 lawmakers solicited ideas, calling for a “free-market alternative to the Treasury Department’s proposal so that, regardless of how individual R.S.C. members vote on final passage, House conservatives have something to be for.”

As the week progressed, it became abundantly clear that one thing conservative Republicans were most certainly not for was the Treasury plan, prompting them to begin searching for an alternative to avoid the perception of strictly being naysayers.

By the end of Friday, at least a portion of their alternative seemed likely to be included in the broader proposal as a sweetener for Republicans, although closed-door negotiations continued into the evening on Friday, and the contours of the final package remained in limbo.

After years of acceding to the White House on a variety of initiatives despite deep misgivings, House Republicans found the administration’s latest proposal to be too much to swallow.

They also complain that Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. has been too quick to bargain mainly with Democrats, led by the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi of California, and Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, not only on this plan but on the stimulus proposal earlier this year, a subsequent housing bill and other economic measures.

For example, in advance of the president’s speech Wednesday, Representative Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan, a member of the Republican leadership, sent out this statement expressing his pique: “Who’s giving the Republican response?”

Doesn’t sound like they’ll be able to. Democrats have decided on tactics (since that’s all that matters to them I might add) and are going to drive a big wedge between conservatives and Bush. At this stage in the game, it may be just as well.

DITTO: And the only thing that will save McCain’s candidacy, IMO is if he votes AGAINST any measure that gives an ounce of dough to Wall-Street!

Bush and the Democrats (and their RINO cousins) are in the sack together preparing to rape the American taxpayer. When will we finally say, “enough is enough”?!?!

I hope so too! The House Republicans under tremendous pressure to cave on conservatism just to get an agreement. All we can pray is they stand fast and look out for us!

I heard this morning that the Treasury and Fed have been working on this “plan” for over a year. Just goes to show you what an out of touch bureaucrats are capable off. I have guys who work for me with no high school diplomas that understand the economy better than this bunch of egg heads at the GS-11 pay grade.

Whatever, the Beaten Wife Conservatives always show up for the election. No matter how bad you treat them, they will support you.

Well, what's the modern equivalent of 1773's tea?

The House Republicans have NO power to stop the Democrats from passing the Paulson plan. They are as irrelevant as can be. The only reason they are in the picture is the Democrats need them for political cover. So far, they are not taking the bait.

I am extremely proud that Paul Ryan is my Congressman. He is one of the brightest spots in the Republican Party and in times like this, would have been a BRILLIANT pick for McCain’s VP.

They won’t be able to because they are on the wrong side of history this time. If they wanted to stand up to W they should have done it back in 2001 when the pork was flying around because of the “new tone in Washington,” and maybe there wouldn’t be such a big mess today.

Eric Cantor was considered to be McCain's pick before he turned to Palin. Bright guy, knows his stuff cold. He's an unabashed conservative.

I keep asking, “Why the urgency?” I mean, we don’t know the market won’t clear. We don’t even know if we’re in a recession yet.

Don’t get me wrong, we probably are in a recession. Let’s at least wait until we know before we jump further into socialism.
