Sarah Palin—The Fall Girl?
Human Events ^ | 9/26/08 | D. R. Tucker

Posted on 09/26/2008 5:11:02 PM PDT by MartinaMisc

Are certain conservatives setting Sarah Palin up to fail?

With the recent news that conservative commentator Kathleen Parker has joined the ranks of anti-Palin conservatives George Will, Charles Krauthammer, David Frum and Ross Douthat (as well as moderate-conservative David Brooks), one has to wonder how these folks will respond if McCain and Palin lose to Barack Obama and Joseph Biden on November 4.

It’s likely that Parker, Will, Krauthammer, Frum, Douthat and Brooks will attempt to blame Palin for a GOP loss, arguing that she was not ready for prime time and that her supposed lack of knowledge drove away independents. While these commentators all deserve respect for their accomplishments, a potential effort by these commentators to blame Palin for the loss will only cause more divisions on the right.

To various degrees, these commentators have issues with what they perceive to be the glorification of conservative populism—and they all seem to view Palin as an embodiment of that populism. In their eyes, Palin seems to symbolize a “guns-babies-Jesus” vision of conservatism that alienates key voters, especially those influenced by America’s secular culture.

These commentators seemingly would have preferred a Republican like Mitt Romney or Bobby Jindal as the McCain’s second-in-command: both Romney and Jindal are conservatives whose public images lack “culture-war” overtones. No one really thinks of conservative populism when they look at Romney and Jindal: Palin, on the other hand, is now seen as the hero of what liberals derisively referred to four years ago as “Jesusland.”

Oh WOW, Palin is not too good with critical, biased, condescending, liberal, agenda driven journalists. So major media, please tell me again why this is a bad thing?

Jindal are conservatives whose public images lack “culture-war” overtones.

Is that right? Jindal is a pro-life Catholic. That would not have been brought up had McCain chosen him?

She’ll hold her own against Biden. Yesterday she called Obama “incredibly naive”, and she did it with gusto.
She’ll wildly surpass expectations.

All of these so-called “conservatives” are Bushbots...solidly in the tank for the 5th worst president in American history. Apparently, they cannot stand the fact that McCain/Palin will upstage Bush/Cheney—the pair who could not lead and certainly could not read the tea leaves when it came to fighting wars or fixing Wall Street.

There is nothing about Palin that is dangerous to the country, nothing she has said, did not say, nothing in her associations or background.

All this condemnation comes from a weak, sissified Republican party, (and us) who have refused to defend her as even a human being.

WE tee hee, har har, when she is mocked on SNL by Fey, so the next week they went further with an incest insinuation.

WE respond to no charge at all by columnists, reporters, comedians, Hollywood stars.....nothing. Save the entertainment mag US, WE DID NOTHING.

None of them had to pay.....even FR laughed along with them.

It is corrosive....but we were above it all comforting ourselves in a mythical backlash

I’m disappointed in Krauthammer.

Krauthammer's disappointed me a few times. He's surprisingly off the mark sometimes, though not often. It's just that when he's off, he's really off. I still remember his rant against the movie The Passion.

I don’t know who Ross Douthat or Kathleen Parker are; Brooks is an NYT columnist and not really conservative; George Will became a bit too full of himself years ago. The only one in this crew I respect is Krauthammer and I think he’s wrong on Palin. McCain would be nowhere if he had picked Romney, Huckabee or any of the rest. She energized the Party and his campaign and he surely would have lost without her. Plus, I gave McCain $500 and would not have given him a cent had he picked Pawlenty or one of the others listed — I doubt I’m alone.

Krauthammer has been very negative about McCain. What is up with him?

Has anyone read any of Katherine Parker’s articles? I have. They drip with ‘elitism’ of the Maureen Dowd type. I tell you, don’t be bothered by the Krauthammers, Wills, Parkers, they are totally out of touch with middle America, and whether an elitist of the left or elitist of the right, you are still an ‘elitist’.

When your so-called “own side” tosses you under the bus, you’ve got to think long and hard about who is on your side.

If the media succeeds in destroying a good and decent person like Sarah Palin, G*d have mercy on this nation.

"Krauthammer"

I like Charles too, but you're correct, nobody is right on all the issues. The K-man is also a gun-grabber, but I look at the whole picture. Based on her lack of experience in the national scene, I figured Palin would have problems early on until she got up to speed on the facts and numbers game played on the national scale. These guys don't want to give her time. I'm sure Biden knows all sorts of facts and numbers, but what does it prove when he's wrong on just about everything you can name. Facts and numbers can be learned, knowing what is the right course for the country, conservatism, is far more important.

“Krauthammer and Will didn’t like Fred Thompson either. They don’t like ANY Washington outsider....”

That actually appears to be the case. Their position seems to be that if one is not a northeast pundit one is simply a nothing.

"not pro-life"

He's also a gun-grabber, but I still like Charles. He's just wrong on some issues.
