President George Bush's emergency meeting to solve the economic crisis in America failed to reach an agreement, a top senator involved has said. Senator Richard Shelby told reporters outside the White House that he did not believe there was an agreement and that the proposals by US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson constituted a "bad plan". Both presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama were taking part in the meeting after being invited by Mr Bush on Wednesday. The president has said a 700 billion dollar (£380bn) rescue plan needs to be agreed "immediately" if the United States is to avoid a "financial panic" and a "long and painful recession". Spokesmen for House speaker Nancy Pelosi and the US Senate Majority leader Harry Reid told reporters that there were "ongoing discussions" and no statements would be made outside the White House. Asked if there was an agreement, one of the spokesmen shouted: "We're still working on it." Mr Shelby's comments shocked US political pundits who had widely expected an announcement that the plan had been agreed. Mr Bush increased pressure on the plan's negotiators on Wednesday night in a prime-time address to the nation, saying that the United States' "entire economy is in danger" and "major sectors of America's financial system are at risk of shutting down". He met with both presidential candidates and leading US politicians on both sides of the House in a bid to help solve the financial crisis after addressing the nation on Wednesday night. Earlier, Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, said he was "very confident" that the US Congress could now act "expeditiously" and approve the plan following a closed door meeting on Capitol Hill.

Here’s some quotes from Dodd, hot off Dow Jones Newswire:
“Meeting was contentious”
“Nothing more than a rescue plan for John McCain”
“Paulson needs to choose who’s side he’s on”
“I won’t be going back to the White House”
and finally, paraphrasing
“I’m outta here”
Wow, what a pissy little b!tch.
>> 0bama ... have his puppet-master’s hand firmly inserted in his rectal cavity before moving his lips.
Oh! Now I get it! THAT’S why we don’t see the strings when he’s up at the podium.
I have long wondered about that.
I didn’t realize it was one of those poop-chute-style thingies.
Thanks for enlightening me.
This might be the best game of chicken I have ever seen.
Anyway--sorry for the "excursion" into CNN--but all FOX had on was the Anthony story. GRRR! They need to keep on top of this story. Hopefully Brit Hume will do it for them--and us!
John Gibson on Fox News reporting that Jim Johnson is still working with the Obama campaign. He’s working specifically with Tom Daschle on a special meeting with Hillary supporters next month. Info came from Politico.com
Good news! I love it when Dems get their panties bunched up in a big fat wad...this affects all Americans, dang it and we DON’T WANT GOV’t taking control. They BOTCH EVERYTHING UP...I’d rather see Wall Street, the markets, etc take a plunge and have the economy tank and then start to fix it through FREE Market inventives, not big gov’t politicians who all got rich off REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS.
Chris Dodd belongs in jail. Seriously, I cannot believe that sleazeball is going to skate. He should be embarassed to show his face in public. The American people should be screaming for him to go to jail. Too bad we have a dishonest press. How can the American citizenry make good decisions when the press is dishonest and gives them bad information?
And this surprises you about Faux News because....?
Nothing more than a rescue plan for John McCain
WTF? If the bailout plan works (and it won’t, at least insofar as the average voter will notice), does anyone think the media will give George Bush or John McCain credit (no pun intended) for it? Ha!
Last night I heard him say credit is drying up.
If so, why do I keep getting unsolicited, pre-approved credit card offers in the mail, and daily phone calls offering me mortgages?
Thanks for the chuckle. :)
“THE MAYFLOWER HOTEL”
Maybe Obama is an Understudy of Elliot Spitzer?
and is the rumor true that Larry Sinclair is staying at The Mayflower today?
No, unfortunately. But now Special Report is on this story—seems like the general consensus is that—there was NO CONSENSUS. And that sounds promising.
Despite everything that the pols say on the road, when the president summons, they go.
I saw that about Johnson! That is OUTRAGEOUS especially at this time! Johnson should be in jail! How will he spin this????
The Mayflower? The Washington Hilton not good enough for the Messiah?
You are probably a person who has a steady income and pays his bills on time.
If the banks don't get bailed out, from now on they will ONLY feel comfortable loaning to people like you.
Can't have that, can we???
